Climate, Jobs and Justice

The People's March for Climate, Jobs and Justice was by all accounts a huge success in spite of snowfall in Denver, pouring rain elsewhere and record sweltering heat in Washington DC. (Click here to see videos of the DC march. Also, watch this People's Climate Movement video.) Did you attend a local event? Please send us your photos and your stories to the blog to share with other activists at thebernieblog2016@gmail.com. Here's a few stories shared by activists from around the country:
From Bob Dorn: In Poughkeepsie, NY on the Hudson River. Me and friends giving out local literature, a sign up to support New York -- New York Healthcare Act, for single payer, Medicare for all, in our state. We're very close to getting this. And in the Hudson Valley, our Walkway on the Hudson, a couple thousand marched; it was 77°.

Marylis Saltzmann marched in Port Jervis, the other side of NY State, on the Delaware.

From Robyn Richards:
I went here in Albuquerque. We had a rally in the heart of the city, marched around several blocks, then got a Native American blessing and some tribal dances right by the side of Central Ave (Route 66!). I brought my first voter registrar kit and sign, but most every person I asked was already registered or at least said so. Also, it was snowing and raining, after being in the 80s just last week. How about that climate, folks?!

Let's encourage more folks to speak out and take a stand for our country and our world. After all, there is no planet B, and we don't want to wind up in the same scenario as described below.

Donny Tiny-Hands, or
How I Learned to Stop Worrying about the Climate, Jobs and Justice and Love the Bombing
by C. A. Matthews

It's hard to know if the US is regressing toward a racist pre-WW II isolationist era or we're heading to perfecting a mid-Cold War hysteria lately with the rhetoric coming out of Washington.  Establishment party members blame Mr. Putin for somehow forcing Democratic Party officials to write inflammatory emails showing how they rigged the primaries against Bernie Sanders. It seems anything and anyone is fair game to be made into a scapegoat so the DNC's own incompetence and corruption are hidden.

The same goes for the other establishment corporatist faction--they blame Paul Ryan, criminal immigrants or welfare queens for whatever ills our society. When caught out in an outright lie or embarrassing situation, establishment politicos click their heels three times and shout, "Russia, Russia, Russia!"and the bought-off mainstream media pundits repeat the scapegoating propaganda until they're blue in the face

The surreality in our world is growing, and what better way to deal with something that  makes absolutely no sense whatsoever than to compare it to something similar which does make sense, such as the classic movie Dr. Strangelove, or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb.

Spoiler Alert: This 1964 Stanley Kubrick film does not have a "happy ending" as such, but it is hysterically funny throughout. Worth watching if you haven't seen it several dozen times and memorized the best lines already. Read the book if you have for a fresh take.
Once you're immersed in the world of Bat Guano, Colonel Kong and Dr. Strangelove the current Trump administration and its tactics makes absolute…

No, I take that back. They don't really make sense when compared to their fictional counterparts. I'm grasping for straws here, but the wind has already blown them out of my hands. Sorry. Let me start again.

The Trump administration's actions prove they doesn't care about destroying our climate and environment as long as they and their rich donors make billions in profit. (Read more about how they're dismantling the EPA so the public can't learn about climate change and science.) This means we have to continue marching and speaking out on this issue. They don't care about working Americans or the elderly without health care, a $15 minimum living wage, ending the school-to-private-for-profit-prison pipeline or protecting the refugees whose homelands we've just bombed back to the Stone Age. To put it simply, Trump and his disciples love themselves to the exclusion of all others, which makes several online memes where "Donny Tiny-Hands" is compared to Jesus even more disgusting and beyond ludicrous.

Some days you wish Dr. Strangelove and company were real people. At least the president in the movie cares about nuclear annihilation and what will happen to humanity. Sort of. He and the other leaders do as long as young, beautiful, nubile women (the rich, white old farts can easily grab) are involved.

Now, why does that grabbing bit sound eerily familiar?

Fortunately for us, there are others with integrity and sanity who can help us see our way out of this surreal mess. Listen to one such voice of sanity and morality:

Now is the time to buckle down and get serious about taking our country back from those who wish to do it (and really all of us) harm. Whether it's a march, a rally or a friendly visit to your elected representatives' local offices to speak to them on the issues important to you, do something this week. (Follow the example of these Nebraskans this past week protesting against the Keystone XL pipeline.) Stand up and be counted. Stand united and cry with one voice, "Our planet and our people are worth more than corporations' endless profiteering! Corporations are not people!"

There's no promise the surreal circus emceed by the Cheeto-in-Chief will end any time soon, but at least we can slow the merry-go-round down some and prevent Donny Tiny-Hands from riding a nuclear missile, like Slim Pickens doing his bronco buster impersonation in Dr. Strangelove. It would be beneath all our dignity if he did.

It's up to We the People to restore our nation's sense of morality and justice for all. It's up to us to protect our climate and our world from further degradation for profit by a handful of billionaires. Encourage one another and build up the movement to take back our civil liberties. We don't need tangerine tyrants to mislead us under the guise of leadership. We can lead ourselves. Power to the people.

From The Guardian:
Bernie Sanders had this to say about climate change and Big Oil:

"Most Americans know that Congress is way out of touch with where the American people are. The Koch brothers and the fossil fuels industry are spending hundreds of millions of dollars on campaign contributions to keep it that way. Too many members of Congress now worry more about the interests of the oil, gas, and coal companies than the interests of their constituents and the well being of the planet.

"The only way we will defeat organized money is to organize through people power. We must stand up and demand that Congress put people over the profits of the fossil fuel industry. That’s why the People’s Climate March in Washington, DC and all over the world on Saturday is so enormously important.

"When millions of people in every country in the world demand that their government work to transition our energy systems away from fossil fuels and toward sustainable energy, we will win. That’s what today is about, and that’s what tomorrow must be about. We must keep up the fight for our children and future generations to come."

And now a poem expressing how many feel about the Trump administration.

A Rebuke to the Current Administration
A poem by Eddie Alvarado

January 20th, 2017, a man who fought the oppressed captured the nation
A man who said the gays should be prayed away to appease creation
A man who is bribed to poison the air of our nation
A man who portrays us as cowards in the world’s greatest nation.

The twitter fingers became trigger fingers

The trigger fingers became the death of us all
The blind men who were conned on the national mall.
The billionaire he chose wants to indoctrinate us all.

We hold these truths to be self-evident that all oppressors are created equal

And when we met Mr. President, the radical right joined the sequel.

They said the swamp will leave the nation
But now the swamp is taking the nation
Lady Liberty is watching the White House collapse
The abused nation is now dealing with relapse

Baby Boomers+ for Bernie

B is for Bernie...and Believers...and #BirdieSanders...and Baby Boomers.

Yes, Boomers. In spite of what the mainstream media says, we exist in numbers in the Bernie camp, 50+ year old male and female voters. We're loud and proud and we're ready for Bernie.  We'll be voting  in Wisconsin in numbers alongside the Millennials, because we heard a little birdie tell us that we--and our kids and grandkids--have a future to believe in when we put Bernie Sanders in the White House. Our mighty Baby Boomer numbers will make it a landslide, too.  You may have forgotten, but we stopped a war. Watch us as we help stop the oligarchs and take back our country. We've been around the block a few times, so we know what it takes and who is worth fighting for--Bernie Sanders, of course. Power to the people!

A Baby Boomer Speaks Out for Bernie

by Bill MacKilligan

I  am a retired pharmacist. I graduated from the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy in 1971. I was part of the Vietnam protest. The protest was attended by so many students at MCP that the college allowed finals to be optional and actually shut down the second oldest and second largest college of pharmacy in the United States. It was such a conservative college that male students were required to wear shirts and ties to class, women had to wear skirts or dresses and everyone changed classes when the bell rang.

I feel the Baby Boomer generation, which included most of the Vietnam protesters and myself, seemed to be the last generation to really protest a very important issue. We felt we could change the world and stop an unjust war. We were right. We could and did. And, in the process, unseated a U.S. President.

Bernie Sanders' campaign has the quality and hope that the baby boomers had in the 1970's.  I feel that he could, if not change the world, at least change this country to include more people in the success of America.  This could be the last opportunity for the Baby Boomer generation to rise up and change this country for the better. Bernie's campaign harkens back to feelings of hope for real change. You feel that everyone should pay their fair share of taxes, and by doing so, we can grow a better, stronger country. Get on the Bernie bandwagon and support his platform. I truly feel this guy is for real.

If you do nothing else, understand the way Bernie sees things and communicate those visions to others. We stopped a war -- we can elect Bernie
 Sanders.

Bernie Sanders Palm Sunday

March 20, 2016

a poem by Barb McMillen
Our voices rose chanting his name. It is he
we came to hear. We lined his path both outside
and in. Our hands reaching to touch him.
He raised both arms and stood an old arch
angel, voice cracking with the ministry of Truth:
the time he said, the time he said, is Now.
Ask, he said, feel, he said, injustice and ignorance--
Rise. Children, too, with tiny smiles not knowing
why but knowing this: the moment
We opened our eyes. And then he spoke
of the earth as though it were a living thing
embraced, life not wealth. His arms
swung forward hands dancing about the air like
fronds, his palms measuring a clattering
symphony of love. The time has come he said
for us to ask. The poor, the lost, the sick,
And We, again, chanted his name
-- not him, but Us. Not me, but We.

Inside Job: A movie review

  by Richard Moore

I just watched the video Inside Job. Everyone should watch it. It gives insight to where we are as a nation financially how we got there and why we need Wall Street reform. It shows how the Clinton’s and my beloved president have been part of the problem and not the solution. Please watch this story of our financial collapse narrated by Matt Damon. (The entire film is available on Vimeo.)

Our Reviewer: "Richard Moore here. Seventy nine year old  and part of the 99%. Hillary is going to attack Bernie more and more as are the one percenters. Keep on keeping on Bernie. Do as you are doing. You are getting more press every day finally."

This Woman is Bernie Strong!

a weekly commentary from one of Bernie's female supporters

What Sanders Has Taught the Democratic Party
by Shawna Paul
Bernie Sanders, an independent democratic socialist, has helped the Democratic Party more than any other candidate in recent years and all before he won a single delegate. Regardless of who gets the nomination, the Democratic Party will forever be stronger because of the candidacy of Bernie Sanders.
How many times have we heard political pundits proclaim that President Reagan could not get elected today because his politics would not be considered conservative enough for the modern Republican Party? Why is this you ask? It is in part because the Democratic Party has lost its way over the last few decades. Unable to coalesce and fight for a true liberal agenda, it has allowed the Republican Party to pull the center of the country to the right.
Now when I say Democratic Party I'm not talking about the rank and file, I'm talking the leaders, the machine, the message. Think Debbie Wasserman-Schultz.
Instead of furthering a platform that includes such Democratic ideals as economic equality, social and criminal justice reform, and fixing a corrupt campaign finance system, the party's sole focus in recent years became reducing Republican damage. The party of FDR and JFK turned its back on being a party of bold sweeping ideas and has been complacent and satisfied for far too long with running on preserving Social Security and keeping a Republican appointee off the Supreme Court. That is until now.
Bernie Sanders is doing now what so many Democrats before him failed to do; he is dragging the Democratic Party (kicking and screaming) to the left. We have already seen the fruits of his labor, as Clinton has quickly dropped her status quo agenda and adopted some of his progressive rhetoric.
While it would be impossible to list all Bernie Lessons, here are four specific takeaways that would be helpful for the Democratic Party to remember, wash and repeat.
  1. Have a vision. It should be big.
  2. The vision must be authentic-- from the heart, not polls or lobbyists.
  3. The vision should be fair. It cannot keep the guy from the other party out of office.
  4. Vigorously defend your vision. There is a reason Republicans call Democrats "flip-floppers."
