Why Is Amazon Abusing Its Workers?

by C.A. Matthews

Why is Amazon abusing its workers?

The company isn’t exactly hard-up. It’s the most profitable firm in America. Its executive chairman and largest shareholder, Jeff Bezos, is the richest man in the world, holding more wealth than the bottom 39 percent of Americans put together.

Amazon is abusing workers because it can.  --Robert Reich, Bessemer and the Power Shift

The original title of this piece was going to be Peeing in Bottles. This past week Amazon made the mistake of trying to Tweet its way out of the allegations that Amazon workers were forced to pee in bottles during work hours in order to keep up the inhuman pace set by management. They implied that workers were exaggerating and that nothing abusive had ever happened in an Amazon warehouse.

It backfired big-time. (Amazon stock even dropped!) More and more sympathize with and support the Amazon warehouse workers in their attempt to organize and start the first union at an American Amazon facility. Nobody likes a bullying billionaire, after all.

But why did it have to come to this? Why couldn't Amazon cooperate and listen to the workers' demands? There's only one reason and Robert Reich is right: Amazon abuses its workers because it can.

Amazon's owner Jeff Bezos knows he can get away with it. A government that won't enact a decent minimum wage or give its citizens universal health care that isn't connected to their employment isn't exactly demonstrating that it cares for those who are being abused by a billionaire monopolist. A government that allows a fast food corporation to crush the measly attempt at a living wage--$15 per hour--isn't exactly proving that "promoting the general welfare" is very high on its list.

The mistreatment of workers is nothing new at Amazon. From an article published in 2019:

Amazon’s cutting-edge technology, unrelenting surveillance and constant disciplinary write-ups pushed the Eastvale workers so hard that in the last holiday season, they hit a coveted target: They got a million packages out the door in 24 hours. Amazon handed out T-shirts celebrating their induction into the “Million Unit Club.”

But Dixon, 54, wasn’t around for that. She started the job in April 2018, and within two months, or nearly 100,000 items, the lifting had destroyed her back. An Amazon-approved doctor said she had bulging discs and diagnosed her with a back sprain, joint inflammation and chronic pain, determining that her injuries were 100% due to her job. She could no longer work at Amazon. Today, she can barely climb stairs. Walking her dog, doing the dishes, getting out of her chair – everything is painful. According to her medical records, her condition is unlikely to improve. --Will Evans, Behind The Smiles

Amazon (and other companies) leave many disabled workers in their wake. You'd think with the bad press, all Amazon workers would gladly join a union and organize like hell for better working conditions. But believe it or not, they all won't. Decades of anti-union propaganda has taken its toll on American workers according to Daniel Medina:

...the organizing effort has been largely led by older workers, many of whom worked in union jobs before coming to Amazon. And many younger BHM1 workers have never interacted with a union over the course of their working lives and may have little understanding of the role a union has traditionally played in the workplace — a consequence, labor experts say, of a decade's long assault on organized labor in the Deep South. --Daniel A. Medina, Some Younger Amazon Workers Still Undecided

So, what really could happen if American Amazon workers aren't allowed to organize? Our history paints a grim picture:

On this day (March 26) 110 years ago, 146 garment workers, including 123 mostly young immigrant women, died in the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire in lower Manhattan. Many of these women were forced to jumped from several stories to the pavement below because the intensely anti-union sweat shop owners had insisted on keeping exits locked and only one of four elevators were operating.

These women were paid $15 a week and worked at least 12 hours a day, seven days a week. The owners of the sweatshop were outliers, who refused to acquiesce to the workers' demands that were made during the city-wide strike by the International Ladies Garment Workers Union for better pay and a more humane work schedule. --Bob Henelly, 110 Years Since the Triangle Shirtwaist Fire, Its Lessons Are Still Unlearned

It's time we learned from history and from the current workers forced to work under inhumane conditions at Amazon warehouses and elsewhere, It's time for everyone to support union organizing. The job--the life--you save may well be your own.

Low-income folks should be able to access abortion.

Representative Barbara Lee, along with Representatives Diana DeGette, Jan Schakowsky, and Ayanna Pressley have introduced the Equal Access to Abortion Coverage in Health Insurance (EACH) Act. EACH is bold federal legislation that aims to get rid of the Hyde Amendment and related abortion coverage restrictions in health care plans.

For more than 40 years, the Hyde Amendment, which bars the use of federal funds for abortions, has created barriers to accessing abortion care that disproportionately affect low-income and women of color. Not only women are affected by this, but trans men and nonbinary folks are also affected by the Hyde Amendment which has effectively stripped healthcare from those who would otherwise have it.

EACH ensures that individuals who receive health insurance through plans like Medicaid or will be covered for their abortion care and we need your help.

The more cosponsors we gain on this important legislation, the closer we get to getting the bill marked up and to the congressional floor. That’s why we need you to email your legislators and tell them to cosponsor EACH, and if they’re already a cosponsor tell them to ask a colleague to join as a co-sponsor as well!

Together, we can work to end the Hyde Amendment and become one step closer to a world where Reproductive Justice is a reality, let’s work to get EACH cosponsored.

URGE is proud to have worked with our friends at All* Above All and other reproductive health, rights, and justice organizations and advocates to reintroduce this historic legislation.

In Solidarity,

Families Belong Together (Logo)

We've all seen the screaming headlines about the border this week, but let me be the first to tell you: they're missing the point.

What's missing from the story is the fact that our collective humanity is at stake. This is about how we as a nation are going to treat children and families

These are mothers and fathers who like any parent would move heaven and earth for their children. They've fled horrific violence, abject poverty, and climate disasters.

Are we really going to slam the door on families who had no other option but to run for their lives? On kids who had no choice but to come here alone?

What's happening at the border didn't happen overnight--and it's certainly not a political football to be thrown around when lives are at stake.

Because you've stood with Families Belong Together from the beginning, I know you care just as much as I do about protecting children and how we as a nation live up to our values. I know that time and time again you've shown up to support our dedicated activists, case workers, attorneys, and coalition of partners who are working 24/7 to keep children out of detention, avoid cruel deportations, reunite families, and welcome children with dignity.

The only thing that matters right now is that children are at our doorstep.

We've mobilized and are working directly with our partners on the ground to push back on the racist, dehumanizing rhetoric that leaves humanity out of the story.

Here are three ways you can help us today:

  1. Pledge your frequent flyer miles, credit card points, or cash to help book flights for migrant families seeking safety.
  2. Take our pledge to join the movement for family dignity and we'll reach out to you with invitations to our volunteer training.
  3. Donate today to reunify refugee families, provide legal services, and supply necessities for families and children at the border.

When The Whole World Comes Together...

When The Whole World Comes Together...
words and photos by C.A. Matthews

We start to act--4 million of us in 150 countries showed up for the first global Climate Strike this past Friday. 500,000 demonstrated in the US alone. On Monday, fifteen young persons began a landmark climate lawsuit against five countries. Now, that's some action!

But we need to do more. We know we can do more. We can't let up now. Greta Thunberg, teenage leader of the worldwide climate resistance, protests every Friday to call attention to the latest travesty committed against our environment.  We should do likewise. Pick a corner, a courthouse step, a mall parking lot and make your stand. Some photos, memes and  slogans follow below to give you inspiration for your signs and banners.

The whole world comes together and hope is born. We need to use that hope to save our planet. There is no Planet B--but there is a world of hope out there. It's time to come together and save the world.  The clock is ticking. As the banner says: "Our home is on fire!" We can't wait to put it out.

Bald eagles, grizzly bears, California condors, gray wolves, American alligators... The Endangered Species Act (ESA) successfully brought these and other iconic species back from the brink of extinction. That's pretty amazing.

But the Trump administration just released new rules that undermine endangered species protections to benefit the oil and gas industry and other corporate interests.

Which would you rather have, Florida panthers or more dirty oil wells?
Tell Congress to stand up to the Trump administration and protect the Endangered Species Act.
Big Oil and Gas has wanted the Endangered Species Act out of the way for a long time. And now it has an administration willing to make it happen.

The new rule changes are slated to go into effect this month, and they include weighing economic impacts when deciding if a species gets protection and making it harder to factor in climate change’s impact on at-risk species.1

Let's not mince words: this attempt to weaken the Endangered Species Act is driven by money. Big Oil and Gas and other corporate interests want to be free to rake in profits regardless of the harm they cause in the process. And the Trump administration has been more than happy to roll out the red carpet for them.

The rest of us have other ideas.
Take Action
Projects like the Atlantic Coast and Mountain Valley pipelines, for example, are facing strong opposition — including court challenges and the revocation of permits — because they threaten endangered bats, salamanders and other at-risk wildlife.

This rollback in wildlife protections isn’t a done deal. These new rules can be challenged in court, as well as by legislators via the Congressional Review Act. Make it clear that you expect Congress to oppose and confront the Trump administration’s attack on this bedrock environmental law.

This is just the latest in a long line of reprehensible actions where the Trump administration has no problem rolling back environmental and climate protections all for fossil fuel profit. But it's important to remember that significant public outcry and bad publicity have torpedoed some previous regulatory rollbacks before — and we can do it again!

Fossil fuel interests shouldn’t get to determine which species survive and which go extinct. Will you stand with me now to protect the Endangered Species Act and the wildlife whose survival depends on it?

Take action with us and our allies to protect the Endangered Species Act!

Onward together,

Tell Congress:
"Pass the TPS for Victims of Hurricane Dorian Act to allow Bahamians to work and live in the United States without fear of deportation."
Hurricane Dorian just devastated the Bahamas. Many of those who survived are now climate refugees, trying to make their way to the United States.
Donald Trump’s racist anti-immigrant hysteria is stopping them.
Every member of Congress must make a choice: Will they enable Trump's hate and help close our borders to Black climate change survivors or lead with moral clarity and pass policies that welcome them? Speak out now to make sure they do the right thing.
With great power comes great responsibility. America has a moral responsibility to the victims of human-caused climate catastrophe.
Storms, droughts and floods will only become more extreme as our planet warms and climate deniers like Donald Trump consolidate power. That means climate disasters will displace more and more people around the world, and fast.
How we respond now will set the tone for the next generation of climate refugees. It’s up to us to ensure that the world stands together to fight the climate crisis together instead of putting up walls and blaming other nations.
That means not only coordinated decarbonization efforts, but justice-led movements to help the victims of the climate crisis.
Thank you,
Mike Phelan

Unite Behind The Science

JOIN US ON EARTH DAY 2020

Yesterday was historic. Four million people of all ages, and led by young people, went on strike for climate action in more than 150 countries. Thank you! Together, we are making a difference. Now is the time for all our movements to keep building.
Today, at another historic gathering for the first United Nations Youth Climate Summit, we called on people, organizations, and communities everywhere around the world to mobilize on Earth Day, April 22, 2020 to stand up for science.

April 22, 2020 not only marks the 3rd anniversary of the inaugural March for Science, but it is also the 50th anniversary of the first Earth Day when 20 million people took to the streets to advocate a sustainable environment on behalf of future generations.

Half a century later, this call to action grows only more urgent as our planet is under siege from greedy corporations, selfish polluters, and short-sighted governments that choose to disregard the scientific consensus. We must immediately act to combat climate change, protect our environment, and safeguard our communities.

These activations will take place around the world in mediums and forms chosen by local communities, such as walk-outs, marches, concerts, teach-ins and more.

To make a transformative impact on April 22 and beyond, we need everyone’s leadership. To uplift and support community organizers all around the world, later this year we will release the first version of a dynamic international tool kit of best practices and lessons learned from social movement leaders who’ve led activations around the world, including March for Science, March for Our Lives, the Global Climate Strike, the Women’s March, and more.

Let’s keep going! Together, we are turning the tide and changing our future.

What's Up, Marcy?

What's up, Marcy?
rally photos by C.A. & A.J. Matthews

What's up, Representative Marcy Kaptur? She has refused  to co-sponsor the Medicare For All (HR 1384) Bill in the House, and now she refuses to sign the "No War with Iran Resolution" (HR 2354). It's very confusing since Kaptur (D), our longest serving Congresswoman representing Ohio's 9th district,  previously supported the Sanders-Conyers Medicare For All Bill.

What's up, Marcy? We know you can do better than this. Much better!

On the picket line, the nurses of St. Vincent Mercy Health picketed alone that day, their fellow medical tech workers having signed a separate contract to return to work earlier in he week. Our Revolution (National), traveling across the country in their Medicare For All van, stopped by Toledo to rally with the striking nurses and local activists.  A national Medicare For All program would help the nurses deal with their current mediocre health insurance coverage. It could possibly help with the extra long hours they've been forced to work due to staffing shortages (because the Bon Secours Corporation that runs their "charity" Catholic hospital chain expects higher profits). If the corporation didn't have to pay health care benefits to its workers because they had Medicare For All, then they could afford to hire more nurses and med techs, right?

Speakers at the Medicare For All protest in front of St. V's included the national director of Our Revolution and local OR leader Dennis Slotnick who also represents the Ohio Single Payer Action Network. Nancy Larson, a candidate for state office in 2020, spoke out as well as Stefania Czech, candidate for Toledo City Council District 2, Quinn Albright, a young activist representing the newly formed Northwest Ohio Democratic Socialists of America, physician-activist Dr. Jon Ross, and Adrian Matthews, a British national and proponent of socialized health care.

After the rally, the crowd headed to Rep. Kaptur's local office downtown to present her staff a petition stating the voters' desire for Marcy to become a co-sponsor of HB 1384.

Unfortunately within a few days of the rally the St. Vincent nurses left the picket line when their union (UAW) folded and told them the strike was over. None of their demands for increased staffing and less mandatory overtime were addressed.

Two days later, another protest formed in front of Rep. Marcy Kaptur's office building located downtown at Maritime Plaza. The Northwest Ohio Peace Coalition had been planning the peace protest rally to inspire Rep. Kaptur to sign HR 2354 for some time when the story of two oil tankers in the Gulf of Oman, supposedly hit by Iranian missiles, monopolized the mainstream news feeds.
Many of the activists at the No War on Iran rally expressed surprise and disappointment in the Democratic  Congresswoman. Why hadn't she signed onto the resolution? What could be holding her back?

It's difficult to know for sure, but Ohio has always been a favorite of Big Oil lobbying interests. Big Oil could realize some massively big profits in taking over Middle Eastern oil fields and shipping lanes. War is a profitable business after all. Is the answer to why Marcy Kaptur hasn't been more vocal on this issue simply "the money is too good to ignore"?

We're very disappointed if it is simply the lobbyists' cash motivating the congresswoman's non-action. You can do better than this, Marcy. Much better!
Our children's futures are at stake here. Without decent, universal health care, many of their futures will be shortened. With more wars for oil, their world becomes an even unsafer place to live in than it already is.

Marcy--what's up? We can't afford to wait for leadership on these issues. All our  lives are hanging in the balance. Listen to these activists. Step up!

From Food & Water Watch

There’s a fast-moving amendment in the House of Representatives that would stop Trump's Department of Energy from financially backing dirty energy projects masquerading as clean energy projects.

A full House vote could happen any time this week, and you can help keep the pressure on by taking action TODAY — tell your representative we need more renewable energy, not dirty fossil fuel projects.

Congresswomen Ilhan Omar (D-MN) and Pramila Jayapal (D-WA) introduced an amendment that would require the Department of Energy to only back energy projects that address and mitigate climate change.

The amendment passed out of a House Committee last week, and it’s headed to the Floor. Make sure your representative is on board!

What would this amendment do? Energy companies would have to demonstrate how proposed projects would meet heightened standards. One affected project is the proposed massive petrochemical build-out in Appalachia. This enormous network of infrastructure is intended to store and process dirty fossil fuels in order to churn out more plastic. This amendment would effectively hold back the Department of Energy from quickly deciding to financially back the project.

Ultimately, we need comprehensive legislation that would move us to 100% clean, renewable energy on a swift timeline, but this amendment is a great step in the right direction.

Officially, it’s called Amendment 105 to Rule 2 on HR 2740, the Omar-Jayapal Amendment. Here at Food & Water Watch, we're calling it what it is — a really big deal and the result of hard work by activists around the country.

We got this far, but now we have a small window of time to urge the rest of the House to stand in support.

Our allies and activists fighting back against projects like the Appalachia petrochemical hub need your support at this critical moment. Tell your representative to support the amendment and stand against a fossil fuel future.

Thanks for taking action,

Amanda Byrnes

From the United Church of Christ:

Stop the Detention of Children

Mark 9:37 tells us that “Whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me welcomes not me but the one who sent me.” As people of faith we are called to care for, welcome and cherish all humanity. The children who come to our border are often fleeing violence and poverty and have endured a long and dangerous journey. They should be met with care and kindness. Once here, every measure should be made that they be placed with family and community sponsors. Instead, as of now, more than 2,500 children are being held in a “child detention facility” in Homestead, Florida.

Contact your members of Congress to let them know this is no way to treat anyone, especially the most vulnerable among us, children. We need to invest in ways to unite families and ensure the best continuum of care for children. Please urge your member of Congress to support the “Shut Down Prison Camps Act” and the “Families Not Facilities Act.” These legislative measures make sure that the government can’t house children in substandard “emergency influx shelters” like Homestead. They also make sure that it’s easier to place children with sponsors by prohibiting the sharing of information with the Department of Homeland Security that could be used to detain and deport family members who come forward to sponsor children.

Everytown for Gun Safety

Wednesday, June 17, 2015, is the day that my life changed.

As a hospital trauma chaplain I have experienced grief, tragedy, pain, and loss as I worked to comfort patients and families in their time of need. But that night four years ago, I was the person in need of comforting when I received a telephone call that no American should get: My mother and two of my cousins had been shot and killed in church along with 6 other parishioners at the Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, South Carolina. A white supremacist shot and killed 9 churchgoers as they prayed.

I lost so much in that senseless attack. And since then, hate crimes have been on the rise, resulting in more people being targeted simply because of their identity.

When hate-filled individuals are armed with a gun, their actions often become deadly.

The shooter targeted parishioners at Emanuel AME simply because of the color of their skin. Along with so many Americans, I was baffled at how such a hate-filled man was able to get his hands on a gun. That's why today I ask you to join me and support federal legislation to keep guns away from people convicted of a hate crime. It's one important step we can take to end hate-fueled gun violence. Add your name to ask the U.S. House of Representatives to pass the Disarm Hate Act of 2019.
Thank you for being with me in the movement against hate and gun violence,
Reverend Sharon Risher
