Poison Pill Politics

by C.A. Matthews

HR1, also known as the For the People Act, creates a national system of automatic voter registration, which is expected to bring millions of new voters to the ballot box, and cracks down on voter suppression tactics. --Ryan Grim, The Intercept

The so-called "For The People Act" has been passed in the House and has been sent on to the Senate. It all sounds great on the surface, but as one peers deeper into its 790 pages some rather troubling features are revealed. While 62% of Americans have stated they want more choices in candidates/parties on the ballot, this bill actually introduces legislation that would make it virtually impossible for third or independent parties to run candidates for office. Added bonus--it enables "Dark Money" to flood campaign coffers of the two so-called "major parties."

A bill that has a coating of good on top to hide its inner rotten core is called a poison pill. And it's not something anyone should swallow.

According to Harvey Wasserman of Reader Supported News:

Though much in HR1 is absolutely essential to the survival of American democracy, one section is a cynical assault on third parties, making barriers to their signature-gathering and fundraising virtually insurmountable. Those clauses come from Democratic operatives who hate the Green Party and other third parties.

HR1 would inflate the amount of money national party committees can give to their candidates from $5000 to $100 million, an astonishing increase of 1999900% that would give party bosses virtually unlimited power to flood elections with Big Money.

This bill is "for the people"? It takes "Big Money" out of politics? Really?

The bill that should have been passed is The Fair Representation Act. Introduced in 2018 and 2019, if enacted ranked-choice voting (RCV) and multi-member districts for Congressional elections would become the law of the land, giving voters more power and more choice.

The Fair Representation Act sounds like a good thing, doesn't it?

But you've probably never heard of The Fair Representation Act if you get your news from mainstream media outlets. All you've heard  is how great the "For The People Act" is from numerous neoliberal talking heads without mention of how it will take away your choice of candidates and add even more unrestricted SuperPACs and Dark Money into US politics. That's because the major networks are owned by a tiny handful of multi-millionaires. They want this poison pill legislation to pass so there will be less chance of independent candidates winning and less chance of third party candidates who can think for themselves representing us, the people, and not them, the oligarchy.

Less democracy means there's far less mess for the oligarchs to keep under control. Far fewer chances for voters to elect representatives who will pass laws to tax these millionaires and billionaires the way they should have been taxed all along. Far less chance of these media monopolies being broken up to increase fairness and competition and give more choices to us, the people.

Fairness and choice?  Fewer chances for the mega-wealthy to purchase politicians with unlimited private donations? Hmm, those sound like healthy things, don't they?

I hope you won't swallow the poison pill called the "For The People Act." Please share this information with others, watch the videos and pass the links along to your friends and family. Because the only true antidote to poison in politics is education and vigilance.

In this video, 2020 Green Party presidential and vice presidential nominees Howie Hawkins and Angela Walker discuss HR1 and the dangers hiding within it.  https://youtu.be/TiUQsekabsk

More from Howie Hawkins' #GreenSocialist Organizing Project:

Like you, we believe in the protection of voting rights, including same-day and automatic voter registration, restoring the franchise to people with criminal records, and an expansion of early voting, voting by mail, and absentee drop boxes...as a first step.

HR 1, also known as the "For the People Act," is a bill that has passed the House and is in the Senate and which contains these types of necessary reforms.  In these days, when Republicans and right-leaning Democrats are happy to make access to the voting booth all the more difficult, these are good reforms that are useful now.

However, there is a specific section of this omnibus bill that deals with matching funds and overall campaign finance that serves to entrench dark and corporate money in campaigns even further.

The major problems with the Campaign Finance of H.R. 1 include:

Excludes Third Parties: The qualifying threshold to receive presidential primary matching funds is increased five times, from $100,000 ($5,000 raised in 20 states in contributions of $250 or less) to $500,000 ($25,000 raised in 20 states in contributions of $200 or less). This higher threshold puts public funding beyond the reach of third-party candidates.

Increases Funding Disparities: The 6:1 ratio in matching funds increases the public funding disparities between candidates by seven times. A 6:1 match for a candidate with $1 million in qualified contributions would yield $7 million. A 6:1 match for $5 million would yield $35 million. The funding disparity grows seven times, from $4 million to $28 million.

Eliminates Private Spending Caps for Publicly Funded Candidates: H.R. 1 eliminates the private spending caps under the existing program of presidential public funding, which limits how much private money candidates who accept public funding can spend.

Increases Big Donations through Party Committees: H.R. 1 increases the amount national party committees can contribute to presidential candidates from $5,000 to $100 million. Each party has three national committees that can make this contribution: the national committee and the party’s house and senate campaign committees. So the total amount increases from $15,000 to $300 million. This change increases the influence of big donors. The current individual contribution limits to a federal candidate’s campaign committee is $5,600 ($2,800 for the primary and $2,800 for the general). The current individual campaign contribution limit to party’s national committees is $109,500. So the super-rich can give up to $328,500 to a party’s national committees.

Increases Big Donations through Victory Funds: H.R. 1 does nothing to curb big donor funding through joint campaign committees of presidential candidates and national and state party committees. This loophole enables the super-rich to give six-figure donations to the presidential candidates’ so-called Victory Funds. In 2020, donors could give up to $620,600 to the Biden Victory Fund and $580,600 to the Trump Victory Fund.

Preserves Unlimited Private Donations for Independent Expenditures: HR 1 does nothing to curb the unlimited donations the super-rich give for independent expenditures by SuperPACs, including as undisclosed “dark money” laundered through 501c4 nonprofits.

In short, the Campaign Finance section in H.R. 1 does not curb the swelling ocean of private campaign funding by corporate special interests and super-rich oligarchs. It simply enables the major party recipients of unlimited private donations to also get some public money as well. It is a reform that doesn’t reform.

Part of the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act (HR 1280), newly reintroduced in the U.S. Congress, is called the Stop Militarizing Law Enforcement Act. This is an issue that World BEYOND War has been working on, with some success, at the local level, and that work will continue no matter what. But this federal law would be a major boost, and it has a good chance of passing if we push for it.

Under this law, the U.S. military would be forbidden to transfer to federal, tribal, state, or local law enforcement agencies the following:

  • Firearms, ammunition, bayonets, grenade launchers, grenades (including stun and flash-bang), and explosives.
  • Vehicles, except for passenger automobiles and bucket trucks.
  • Drones.
  • Controlled aircraft that are combat configured or combat coded or have no established commercial flight application.
  • Silencers.
  • Long-range acoustic devices.
  • Items in the Federal Supply Class of banned items.

Click here to tell Congress to pass this bill right away!

Demonstrators across the United States declared in one voice that "Black Lives Matter," demanding criminal justice reform at the federal level. The George Floyd Justice in Policing Act was the House's response.

An overdue package of reforms, the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act, in addition to demilitarizing police, makes police more accountable, reforming qualified immunity, creating a national registry of police misconduct, prohibiting racial profiling, banning no-knock warrants in drug cases, banning excessive force, incentivizing the banning of chokeholds and carotid holds, and requiring the use of body cameras, but forbidding the use with those cameras of facial recognition technology.

HR 1 is sold as a way to get money out of politics and to protect voters but it contains a poison pill for democracy and opposition parties like the Green Party. HR1 quintuples the amount of money Green presidential campaigns will be required to raise to qualify for federal matching funds: from $5,000 in each of 20 states to $25,000 per state.

The Green Party stands opposed to this bait-and-switch legislation that claims to improve access to voting while actually dismantling everyone's right to organize electorally against the parties of War and Wall Street. In a recent Gallup poll, a record 62% of US voters said we need a new major party.

HR1 is just the latest example of how the parties of War and Wall Street have no shame about strangling democracy to preserve their duopoly, even while pretending they're doing exactly the opposite. Please donate to the Green Party today so we can fight back.

No doubt you've heard from "progressive" groups about how HR1 contains much-needed voter protections. And it's true, HR1 contains some badly needed reforms. That makes it all the more shameful for the Democrats to use those reforms as cover to eliminate competition from alternative parties.

Go to our Action Page and Tell Congress: Stop HR1, the "Voting Rights Bill" That Restricts Voter Choice!

And make sure you tell your family and communities how HR1 will:

  • Eliminate the limits on donations and expenditures candidates can receive and make — what kind of campaign finance reform is that?

  • Inflate the amount of money national party committees can give to candidates from $5000 to $100 million, an astonishing increase of 1999900% that would give party bosses virtually unlimited power to flood elections with big money

  • Abolish the general election campaign block grants that parties can access by winning at least 5% of the vote in the previous presidential election. HR1 will eliminate this provision that was created to give a fair shot to alternative parties that demonstrate significant public support

  • Replace the general election block grants (where each qualified candidate receives a set, lump sum of public funding for campaign expenses) with matching funds through Election Day — a huge step backwards for public campaign finance reform — using the above-mentioned criteria designed to squeeze out alternative parties and independent candidates

Instead of trying to fool American voters and eliminating minor party voices, the Green Party calls for real reforms to democratize elections:

  • The Fair Representation Act, introduced in 2018 and 2019, would enact Ranked-Choice Voting (RCV) and multi-member districts for Congressional elections, giving voters more power and more choice

  • Individual state governments should enact RCV for their elections, including the presidential election

  • Fully-public campaign finance for every federal, state and local office through the Clean Money/Clean Elections model now used in Arizona and Maine

Make sure you sign the petition today!

Power to the People!

Power to the People!
by Cindy A. Matthews

"Anybody knows that the people have the power. All we have to do
is awaken the power in the people." - John Lennon

Our Revolution has begun.

Bernie gave a masterful speech in New York City entitled "Where do we go from here?" and outlined that we have much to do to bring about a future to believe in. His live stream address last week asked if we were ready to run or help others run for office to bring about real change and over 20,000 individuals responded they would. (You can still respond to the call at http://berniesanders.com/win )

Yes, that's twenty thousand Americans willing to break the bonds of fear and apathy and become leaders of our democracy. We are the people, and we have the power!

The People's Summit in Chicago this past week also brought forth many great leaders and speakers who encouraged us all to do more than just take to the streets in Philadelphia in July (information about the March on DNC can be found on our page on the sidebar). Nina Turner's speech at the summit energized us with her admonition to become "Doers of the deed!" I believe she meant that now isn't the time to sit back and lick our wounds or fall into a funk--it's time to get out and fight hard to restore our democracy. As John Lennon said it's time to wake up. As Rosario Dawson points out we can't "un-know" how powerful we are once we've discovered it. We're awake and we're powerful and we've been given our orders.

See you in Philly. Power to the people!

Take a stand and join the political revolution like our bloggers this week. Check out the "how to submit" page for instructions on how you too can support your fellow revolutionaries by writing for and donating to The Bernie Blog. Thank you.

 Fighting for our Democracy
by Dirk Droll

Friends, we are in the fight of our lives, the fight for our country and our future. Let there be no doubt: The foremost battle we need to win in this fight is the battle for our democracy. All our hoping and voting will do us no good as long as the crooks controlling the electoral process can simply make up the election results to the cheers of our corporate media, accompanied by our quiet resignation when too many of us dazedly believe their fabrications and never push back. The fraud is real and massive. But so is our ability to fight back!

For many, election fraud in our country is hard to believe because it is so sophisticated. But haven't you noticed a few things?

We are not stupid. We are simply too busy to notice or fight the small stuff. Sly as they are, the enemies of our democracy come for our vote in multiple attacks. They steal a piece here, another there, hoping you won't notice or raise more than an eyebrow. Remember the rumors you may have heard about purged or switched voter registrations, mysterious absentee votes completely flipping the night's results at the last minute, Clinton's late-arriving votes bringing the number of votes above the number of voters, the night's tally of one candidate (Bernie's, of course!) actually going down instead of up, and official counts disagreeing totally with exit polls way beyond the margin of error? Usually, where there is so much smoke there is a fire. Many small fires make an inferno. (Editor's note: Check out the article links on our Election Fraud and Voter Suppression Page for more information.)

By these many small to mid-sized attacks our elections die the death of a thousand cuts. Each instance is easily played down by the corporate media and easily dismissed by each of us as a minor glitch which won't affect the total outcome. However, they add up to hand the nomination (and possibly later the presidency if the GOP doesn't cheat even more efficiently in November) to a certain Hillary Rodham Clinton. As Secretary of State, if the reports are true, she  made dozens of arms deals with corrupt foreign regimes in return for bribe money she uses now to  buy herself the presidency. Will she be prosecuted? We will see. In the current state of our nation, criminals in high places usually go scot-free.

If this election fraud surreptitiously had not accompanied the primaries and caucuses from day one, Bernie would already be our Democratic Party nominee. Hillary's race would have been over months ago, exposed for the unpopular power grab from above that it is. It is high time we fight back!

I have compiled a list of their machinations and how we can stop them, adding of which would unfortunately exceed the desired word count on this blog. You can find it in the full version of my article on my own little blog where I have no word limit. Read it and act. Let's stand together.

When we act, the 99% are too big to fail!

An Open Letter to the DNC:
You are on Notice

by Bern Notice

To the DNC:

At the beginning of this primary season, you were sure that everyone was ready for Hillary. You, and the corporate media were 100% certain that your candidate would breeze to the nomination without a real challenge. I'm sure that you thought that this year would be another year to simply herd the masses behind your pre-packaged candidate. In some ways, I'm sure that you still think you can simply wave your hand and say, "Follow our candidate! You have no other choice."

Well, that plan is going to be more difficult than you thought. If you think that this is over, you couldn't be more wrong. I have a saying, "The greatest threat to government corruption is a well-informed electorate." Up to this point, you have been able to have your way because of either the lack of awareness or the apathy of the general public.

That apathy has now turned into anger. Prior to this point, many on the internet focused more on cat videos or other recreational pursuits than anything else. Now, the internet is being used as it should be--a tool to advance discussion and a resource to undercut the spin and lies you try to feed us whenever you want us to follow you like a bunch of lemmings.

As we share information and show the actual historical footage and documentation of what happened, we open the eyes of yet another person who thought that you actually represent "the working class citizen." I don't know whether someone has told you or not, but let me you: You haven't represented us at all, and we are hip to your game.

You represent your own selfish craving for wealth and power. You represent the corporations and multi-millionaires. You only represent us when it is convenient for you. You put on a front trying to be this shining light for the working class citizen while getting your pockets lined by the wealthy lobbyists and donors who control your puppet strings.

Make no mistake, some of the blame for your failures fall on us, the voter. We made it easy for you to ignore us because we didn't vote you out of office regularly enough and replace you with fresh faces. Some of us voted straight down the party line instead of checking your voting record and holding you accountable for it.

We made mistakes, but we are rectifying those mistakes right now. The rest is on you, DNC. When you ignore your constituents calls for action for or against a bill, that is your choice. When you punish average citizens for violations of laws and statutes, then grant a pass to a colleague for the same violation, that's
your choice. When you suppress the vote, or alter results in an election so that you can elect your chosen candidate, that's your choice.

The Sanders campaign that challenged your reign of oligarchy was not a anomaly. It is a warning. If you think Berniecrats will fall in line after what you did in this primary, think again. Loyalty isn't gained through fear and threats. It is earned through deeds and integrity and performing the will of the people. We are far from done.

We will stay active to ensure the mayors, governors, Congress members and other members of the political elite are voted out of office. We will replace them with people of integrity who have a desire to fulfil the will of the working class voter. You have not earned our vote based on your actions. You have earned our contempt and with that comes consequences on election day in 2016 and into the future.

Your "Third Way Democrat" supporter base shrinks while our numbers grow. Your grip on power has loosened as has been shown in this campaign. It is no longer iron clad. It is faltering. We know this because you would not have to go to the lengths that you did in this election otherwise.

This is your wake up call. This is your political warning. Either submit and do the people's work or know  your position is in peril come the next election. You are now on notice!

This Woman is Bernie Strong!

This week's "This Woman is Bernie Strong" commentary is a bit different. The information below is for Berners to join the class action fraud lawsuit against the DNC because they misrepresented how our donations to the Democratic primary  were going to be used. Since most of us did not intend our donations to the DNC and/or Bernie Sanders campaign to be used to finance criminal activity to suppress the vote or rig voting machines and ballots, we have the right to sue for redress.  Email the attorneys below to join. (I did.) Power to the people!

Dear Fellow Citizen:

What is This Case About?

This is a fraud lawsuit.

On June 15, 2016, an anonymous hacker known as Guccifer 2.0 released documents purportedly hacked from the servers of the Democratic National Committee (DNC), the formal governing body of the Democratic party, and the coordinator of the 2016 Democratic Presidential primary race.

The hacked documents strongly suggest that the DNC colluded with Sec. Hillary Clinton's campaign to perpetrate a great fraud on the public.

This class action lawsuit is against the Democratic National Committee (DNC), and any affiliated persons and entities.

How to Get Started

Thank you for reaching out to us.  As attorneys, we are truly energized by the outpouring of support for this class action lawsuit.  Class actions are, and should be, client-driven lawsuits, where a group of people represent everyone in the Class, and act with everyone's interests in mind.

Please email us at dncfraud@jampac.us to obtain a copy of the legal papers on how to get involved.

If you have donated directly to the DNC since Bernie entered the race, we would like to speak with you! (Editor's note: I was informed that you can join the lawsuit if you donated only to Bernie as well.)

Time is of the essence, so your prompt attention is greatly appreciated.

Here's a great quote from Berner Anthony Lewis: "Bernie has said it since day one: We need a political revolution. This campaign is about a political revolution — millions of people standing up and saying, enough is enough."

"We win when people come together. We win when we reject division. We need policies that bring us together and create an economy that works for all of us, rather than a few. Welcome to the political revolution."

Let's end with a rousing anthem--Power to the People! It's #OurRevolution
Get out and fight for democracy this week. You'll be glad you did.

The War on the Middle Class

From now until Sunday, January 10, vote for Bernie in the MoveOn endorsement poll and tell all your friends to vote, too: http://act.moveon.org/survey/2016_presidential_endorsement-vote/

In the manner of Washington commanding his troops and leading them across the Delaware...
Our Commander-in-Chief against the Oligarchs!

The War on the Middle Class

 by Cyril O'Reilly

It's not just about Democrat and Republican anymore. It's about the whole system being so corrupt  that it is no longer serving the people. Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump are playing for the same corporate elite team, the Third Way politician's "War on the Middle Class" through divide and conquer politics of the Clinton, Trump and Bush Dynasties.

Third Way politicians' divide and conquer politics have taken over the political process over the last 35 years. Third Way politicians are politicians from both parties, very wealthy Republicans and Democrats like Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump. The RINOs and DINOs get together and agree on everything to do with their collective money interests and power in lieu of direct or indirect favors or kickbacks from tax dodging Wall Street bankers, the oil industry, the war-for-profit industry and multinational corporations who have slowly sucked the life blood out of our American way of life while contributing less and less to our country. Third Way politicians only differ on "social issues" to give the appearance, the illusion they are against each other, because they know Americans will always split on the "social issue."

This is how the rich elites like Trump and Hillary, the Plutocrats, Corporatists, Oligarchs, the 1% Ruling Class, or whatever name you want to give them--Third Way politicians--from both sides have divided and conquered the American people for a very long time now. Third Way politicians know "social issues" are divisive issues with a no one-size-fits-all solution to them. They use them to instill fear in people that their rights are going to be taken away. And, of course, we all get fearful when we think someone is going to take away our rights. Who wouldn't?

This is the political manipulation used on the American people by both the Left and Right over and over again until they get the American people so loud, angry and heated with each other that we stop paying attention to the real moral crises of our time, which is their War on the Middle Class with Endless-Wars-for-Endless-Profits and the poverty and income inequality it creates here at home and around the world. Wall Street insider trading, wage theft from ordinary workers, too big banks, obscene CEO pay, payoffs to "friendly" politicians on the take from billionaires taking over of our government and our democracy… What they don't realize is that the people are waking up to this diversionary tactic to see through it for the ultimate 1% deception it really is.

Hillary Clinton, just like Jeb Bush or Donald Trump, is a Third Way politician. These politicians will never send their sons and daughters to fight and die in these economic wars. Cowards all. You will hardly, if ever, hear about the issue of Third Way Politics being discussed in the corporate mainstream media news because the companies who own these media outlets are the very ones who are practicing Third Way politics. They don't want the general public to become aware or educated about how much they use divide and conquer techniques or how the Third Way political system is being implemented by them. They play both sides, and we end up paying for these endless wars with our lives and our money.

Let's pull the sheets on these warmongering cowards who gong empty patriotism while lining their pockets. Enough of endless wars that have not only destroyed other countries and created new enemies but have destroyed our middle class right here at home. It's been sixteen years since President Bill Clinton's disastrous decision to repeal FDR's Glass-Steagall Act, which brought about the 2008 Great Recession. Hillary, Trump and the Bush families, as well as their Wall Street and banking cohorts, made the most of their millions and billions while the middle class and working poor paid for the bank bail-out with our tax dollars. For a decade and a half leading up to the 2008, Trump and Hillary didn't take any actions because they were too busy getting rich off the banks being deregulated. Now, all of a sudden, they promise the American people that they are going to "fix it," tell Wall Street to "cut it out" and "make America great again?"

If you believe that then I don't know what to tell you. Here is the billion dollar question to ask yourself: Why after 35 years, with both Democratic and Republican presidents in office, do these same trickle-down tax policies and repealed laws , which only help the rich get richer and  destroy our middle class way of life, still exist? Answer: Third Way Politicians. Their time of ruling over us is coming to an end, and they are terrified as well they should be.

Two hundred-forty years ago Americans kicked out a British king-- only to be replaced by a bunch of corrupt Wall Street kings! This is not the America or the world I want to leave for my children. This is not “Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness” that our Declaration of Independence talks about. The only other weapon the corrupt Wall Street banking and political elite (greedy Republicans and Democrats) have in their arsenal, beside divide and conquer and distracting us with the war they've been waging on the middle class, is their "War on Terror." This includes ISIS who they helped to grow, create and, yes, even fund--by accident or not--by leaving tanks and other military weapons behind for the terrorists to use.
Yes, we must now defeat the terrorists who they helped to create. But a big part of defeating the terrorists is defeating and rooting out the corrupt political system and the war profiteers who help perpetuate them for no other reason than  to line their greedy pockets. These profiteers secretly and slowly chip away at our 1st and 2nd Amendment Rights, freedoms, civil liberties and privacy rights. Again it's all at the expense of the middle class and the poor around the world--with the added expense of what appears to be endless war as the "gold standard" for this new American way of life.

Is this what Americans' lives have finally become worth? Debt slaves and war fodder for elites who will never fight these wars or know the life shortening struggle of barely getting by because they haven't changed tax policies and laws to benefit the middle class and working poor for the last 35 years? Are they that out-of-touch to see what is going on right here at home?

We need an infusion of real financial, political and social reforms to offset the unchallenged con job of the "trickle-down" and unfair tax polices we were sold and which continues to hurt us to this very day. There's culpability from both corrupt Republicans and Democrats exploiting and rigging the system. It's wrong and not good for the future of our country. We need change.

Time to fight back. This is why I'll be voting for Bernie Sanders for president in 2016.

 Off to the Caucus

Shall we make Warren roll over in his grave?
A lot is happening this week in the Bernie Sanders campaign, and we're barely into 2016. I'll be attending the Ohio Democratic Delegate Caucus tonight where Bernie's delegates will be selected for this summer's Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia. This is my first time ever to involved in such a political process. I'm nervous. I'll be traveling to the heart of our extremely gerrymandered district, located squarely in the heart of Republican country, namely the hometown of  infamous Republican president, Warren G. Harding

While Harding's administration became notorious for its numerous corrupt officials involved in the Teapot Dome Scandal, President Harding didn't live long enough to experience the media circus and the smudge on his reputation. And, at least in Marion, Ohio, the small town newspaperman who became president for a brief time is revered. He and his wife have a very nice memorial in the local cemetery.  It's worth visiting if you're ever in the area.

But it's 2016 and it's time for a political revolution. It's time for change. Bernie's supporters are coming to town. Marion is about to #FeeltheBern. Ohio 4th Congressional District voters--see you at the caucus. More on my experiences next week.
