No One Should Live in Poverty

"Why don't we cut child poverty in whole? Why are we leaving half the children in poverty? How much child poverty are you comfortable with?" All valid questions Jimmy asks the propagandists. https://youtu.be/7SboDoWF_XU

The Trinity of Needs

by Coast Watcher

Nobody should lack a roof over their heads, food on the table, and access to free healthcare. This is a simple trinity of needs that a country as rich as the United States is more than capable of meeting. In fact it’s right up there in the preamble to the Constitution—it’s the American government’s duty to promote the general welfare.

General (definition): Everybody.

Welfare (definition): Health, happiness, prosperity.

Instead we have the unedifying spectacle of the government doing it’s best to water down all welfare passed to its people while providing ever-greater wealth for a select minority of uber-rich parasites. The one-off $1400 is patently less than the $2000 Biden and numerous so-called Democratic Party candidates promised before the Georgia run-off elections in a clear bribe to the electorate. It’s also means tested. That’s right; the so-called Democrats delivered less than their governmental partner in crime, the Republican Party.

If the United States was a properly-functioning country it'd be focused on getting affordable nutritious food to all people as a form of health care. Instead it’s entirely focused on food banks to ensure people don't starve to death. Food deserts are rife and spreading as supermarket chains grow ever larger and migrate to the wealthier neighborhoods.

If the United States were not a failed nation, it would provide housing for all its citizens. There are on average 550,000 people sleeping rough every night in all weathers. There are on average 4.2 vacant houses for every homeless person. Instead banks and mortgage companies seize properties which then stand vacant for years in a state of gradual decay.

Thirty two out of thirty three first world nations have universal free-at-the-point-of-use healthcare services. Only the United States does not. Instead, American healthcare costs on average twice as much as that found in any other country, while delivering half the value.

The situation is as it is because there are those who make money out of poverty, hunger, poor healthcare and homelessness. These people would have you believe the people afflicted by these dire situations are to blame for their plight. The money to rectify all these problems is there. The political will is not. Politicians prefer to cozy up to Big Business and accept funding and policy direction from their boards of directors than to listen to what the ordinary people need.

The time has come for a drastic change for the better, before it’s too late.

BIO: Coast Watcher isn't buying the "We can save half the children in poverty" line of the Dems. Every child could be saved. He sees who's behind these morally corrupt politicians and why they don't act too anxious to end poverty for all time for everyone on the planet. #CapitalismKills is more than just a hashtag--it's a truth that is becoming more and more evident to more and more people than ever before. Don't let them try to convince you that some folks must live in poverty in order for our economy to function...because no one should.

I went to Louisville, KY, last summer and felt the violence of the Louisville Metropolitan Police Department firsthand. Three of my friends were arrested while we protested for justice in Breonna Taylor’s name, and I was sent to the hospital after police shot us with rubber bullets.

Luckily, they weren’t real bullets, and I wasn’t another Black woman murdered by police.

One year ago today, Louisville police officers shot and killed Breonna Taylor. She was a young, Black woman like me, only a little older. Despite Breonna Taylor’s murder receiving intense press coverage and her name becoming known worldwide, we still don’t have justice. Her murder sparked a nationwide outcry – I was on the streets of Washington, D.C., nearly every day this summer alongside hundreds of peaceful protesters, demanding justice for Black lives, including Breonna Taylor and her family.

Police violence is gun violence. Breonna Taylor was one of the many Black women who was unfairly and unnecessarily stolen by America’s racist gun violence epidemic. And it’s not something unique to my generation: Black people have faced deadly bias and racial profiling from police for decades and are twice as likely to be killed by them. We must take action to protect Black lives, C.A.. Right now, the Senate has the chance to pass sweeping police accountability policies that would potentially save Black lives and chip away at the racist institution that took Breonna Taylor’s life.

The House passed the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act this month and if it passes the Senate, it could prevent unjustified murders by police. This bill would ban the use of chokeholds, like in the murder of George Floyd, and ban no-knock warrants — like the one that police used to enter Breonna Taylor’s home. This is a critical step in drastically overhauling the racist policing tactics that are taking the lives of far too many Black Americans.

Since the moment I had to use my classmate’s lifeless body to protect myself from being shot at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in 2018, I have been putting my own body on the line to fight against the gun violence that is predominantly killing Black and Brown young people. Today, one year after Breonna Taylor was murdered by police, I am asking you to fight with me and take action against racist gun violence perpetrated by police. I am asking you to fight as hard as I do for Black lives.

In honor of Breonna Taylor, will you sign our petition urging the Senate to pass this critical legislation to address policing? We cannot end gun violence without ending police violence.

I am remembering Breonna Taylor today. I am thinking of all the Black women who I am lucky to know and work with every day. And I will keep fighting for Black women until we finally address gun violence in this country.

Thank you for fighting for justice for Breonna Taylor and Black lives.

From Roots Action:

As a result of broad U.S. economic sanctions, countries such as Iran, Syria, Venezuela, North Korea, Sudan, and Zimbabwe struggle without adequate food, electricity, medicine, medical supplies, masks and respirators. Those who suffer most under sanctions include pregnant women, children, and the chronically ill.

We need to urge the Biden administration to issue a worldwide temporary general license to allow all countries and locations sanctioned by the United States to be able to easily import all related medicines, medical supplies, and vaccines, to facilitate international relief efforts related to COVID-19.

We've put together, with our allies, a petition that will be delivered to President Joe Biden; Vice President Kamala Harris; White House Chief of Staff Ron Klain; Sec. of State Antony Blinken; Sec. of Defense Lloyd Austin; Sec. of the Treasury Janet Yellen; and Sec. of Commerce Gina Raimondo.

The U.S. Treasury Department has the power to issue a worldwide, temporary general license authorizing the exportation and re-exportation of medical supplies and equipment and other essential goods that might otherwise be prohibited by sanctions. The temporary general license would not require Congress to suspend or repeal sanctions and would only cover the listed types of supplies and equipment. By making it clear these types of financial transactions are allowable, this license would aid in the donation or sale of items such as test kits, respirators, sanitizers, personal protective equipment, and medicine, which are all critical for preventing and treating COVID-19.

U.S. economic sanctions technically exempt humanitarian items -- but banks, insurance companies, and other corporations are afraid that if they make loans, provide insurance for shipments, or send goods, the U.S. government will accuse them of violating the sanctions, levy hefty fines, and place them on a banned business list.

An April 2020 Human Rights Watch report explained that sanctions have had a particularly detrimental effect on Iran’s healthcare system, as the country lacks access to critical medical equipment and medicine despite existing exemptions. UN Human Rights Commissioner Michele Bachelet echoed this point when she called for an easing of sanctions for COVID-19 relief. Past Republican and Democratic Party administrations have issued temporary general licenses after earthquakes in Iran. So, there is precedent for following through on this request.

We Have To Fundamentally Change

 We Have To Fundamentally Change

(What Are You Celebrating?)

Why should any American "celebrate" the results of this presidential election?

Many Americans are facing looming evictions and downsizing due to the pandemic, while the number of Covid cases increases daily, the death toll mounts, and many more are without affordable health care than ever before. And our president-elect has openly said he will veto any Medicare For All bill that crosses his desk--if one even gets that far.

If "nothing would fundamentally change," according to Mr. Biden, then it will be up to us--we have to fundamentally change. We have to become braver and more willing to take on the fixed, corrupt system and break it wide open. We can't let things remain static, unchanged, when our very lives and the fate of our planet stand in the balance.

Some have already started planning how they will bring about fundamental, progressive change and ask you to join them in their efforts: https://howiehawkins.us/keepfighting/

The general mood in the "Twitterverse" among true progressives about the results of this election cycle has been somber. The following examples illustrate their concerns and frustrations:

Ryan Knight (@ProudSocialist) tweets: Joe Biden is a neoliberal corporatist who has spent 47 years propping up our corrupt system. He is not a savior.

Dr. Jill Stein (@DrJillStein) tweets: Nice to hear speeches without the racist abuse of the past 4 years. But not a word of commitment to real solutions for the crises killing us - like M4A, Covid relief, a long-term eviction moratorium at the least. Platitudes don't make me want to celebrate.

A paraphrase of several good tweets:

Sorry if I'm not quite as enthusiastic as you are that the proud author of the 1994 Crime Bill that has incarcerated thousands of Americans (especially those of color) and the backer of the US Iraq War that has caused huge loss of life in that country, as well as PTSD in American service personnel, is now in charge. Those sorts of things, and the people who are proud of their involvement in them, just don't appeal to me very much.

Jimmy Dore says, "Trump loses! Now what?"  It's a serious question. And he stresses, "We need an independent media that pushes politicians, not protects them." Listen to his valid complaints in the following video.

 https://youtu.be/gSYQYGAhcEQ

Pulitzer Prize-Winner Chris Hedges puts it eloquently in his essay, American Requiem:

Well, it’s over. Not the election. The capitalist democracy. However biased it was towards the interests of the rich and however hostile it was to the poor and minorities, the capitalist democracy at least offered the possibility of incremental and piecemeal reform. Now it is a corpse. The iconography and rhetoric remain the same. But it is an elaborate and empty reality show funded by the ruling oligarchs — $1.51 billion for the Biden campaign and $1.57 billion for the Trump campaign — to make us think there are choices. There are not. The empty jousting between a bloviating Trump and a verbally impaired Joe Biden is designed to mask the truth. The oligarchs always win. The people always lose. It does not matter who sits in the White House. America is a failed state.

On Facebook, a local activist voiced well what many are feeling this week:

Why I Will Not Be Celebrating the Election Results

by Sean Nestor

I will celebrate when single payer healthcare is enacted and people can receive medical treatment without it ruining their lives. I will celebrate when qualified immunity is ended, the police are demilitarized, and law enforcement offices aren't let off the hook for executing black people in the streets. I will celebrate when the concentration camps at our borders are closed down and migrant families are no long split apart and children no longer disappear into human trafficking rings. I will celebrate when we see a full troop withdrawal from the Middle East and we start using our tax dollars to fund much-needed domestic programs  instead of killing innocent people abroad.

If you think the Biden/Harris administration is going to do any of that, you're either uninformed or dishonest. Nothing in their campaign rhetoric nor their time in public office suggests that those will happen without borderline revolutionary activity from the public. And in the spirit of honesty, the vast majority of Democrats, in spite of the memes they share, are ready to go to brunch for the next four or eight years because Trump is gone.

I know this because I remember 2008 very clearly. At the time, we had two terms of a monster President who drug us into two costly and unnecessary wars, grew the police state in the name of counter-terrorism, and bailed out Wall Street on the back of working people everywhere. People bragged about voting for inanimate objects over Bush, as though lowering the bar like that was something to be proud of.

What we got starting in 2008 was eight years of "At least he's not Bush!" and a climate of shushing anyone who dared criticize the Democrat for not doing enough to address the real problems that were growing around him. Everything that was an outrage when Bush did it became defensible or just swept under the rug when Obama did it. I was practically spit on when I criticized Obama's continuation and expansion of military action in the Middle East, or his ramping up of deportations, or his refusal to promote single payer while supposedly tackling healthcare reform.

Well, that climate brought us Trump. In another four or eight years, mark my words, it will bring us someone even worse.

Cue the hand-wringing and frustrated pleas about the powerlessness of Democrats under a Republican Senate. Look--if Democrats can raise billions of dollars and organize tens of millions of people all over the country to vote someone into office, they can do the same to enact single payer healthcare or eliminate the electoral college or a major nationwide gerrymandering reform or something meaningful to change this country, regardless of the Senate's disposition. That's what politics are for.

Politics are all about figuring out how to enact policy in spite of obstacles, not pointing out obstacles and adjusting your standards accordingly. There is an extremely disgusting culture in the Democratic Party of competing over whose standards are lowest, giving up on ideals immediately and invoking some trite rhetoric about the importance of compromise in politics. But their compromise is always with Karl Rove or Steve Bannon and never Michelle Alexander or Aviva Chomsky. It's a lie comfortable people tell themselves to justify their own laziness and lack of compassion.

My standards are human rights standards, and I'm not lowering them come hell or high water. Call me privileged or elitist, but I'm not celebrating until I know for sure that we've genuinely protected the vulnerable minorities that are constantly preyed upon by this nation's governments.

I know victories are few and far between, and the temptation is high to celebrate them even when they are hollow, so I don't judge or begrudge anyone who wants to express their pleasure at the end of the Trump nightmare. I sincerely hope it provides you with relief and healing. But please don't repeat history and pretend like any of this marks a sea change in our country's politics. We seriously cannot afford a repeat of the smugness and complacency that brought us Trump, because at this trajectory, we're going to get a Trump again before we know it.

"Let them call me rebel and welcome, I feel no concern from it; but I should suffer the misery of devils, were I to make a whore of my soul." --Thomas Paine

 From Friends of the Earth:

Joe Biden will be our next President -- and he’s starting to fill powerful positions within our government. Take action to reject corporate lobbyists for key nominations.

Every President in recent memory has filled their government with appointees with close ties to large corporations. When corporate cronies are in government agencies and in the Cabinet, it provides them with the means to undermine protections Americans count on. Instead of considerations for the people, they favor rollbacks and giveaways for big business.

Pressure from people like you can stop the Senate from confirming corporate cronies for these positions. That’s why we’re asking you to demand our elected officials oppose the confirmation of any more corporate lobbyists.

Take Action: Demand the Senate reject corporate lobbyist appointees.

Sign Now

Biden will need to fill thousands of government positions -- from the head of the EPA to deputy secretaries at over a dozen agencies. These appointees have power to implement our environmental protections.

Look at what happened under Trump -- he appointed, and the Senate confirmed, fossil fuel lobbyist David Bernhardt to the Department of the Interior. Bernhardt has overseen huge giveaways of our public lands to benefit the fossil fuel industry.

The vast majority of Americans agree that large corporations have too much power. We need your help to change that!

Sign the Petition: No more conflicts of interest that benefit big business. No more corporate appointees.

Sign Now

Our elected officials must reject appointees with direct ties to big business. But without hearing from concerned American’s like you, C.A., they might not act.

Don’t let nominees with ties to mega-corporations make key decisions for the people. Demand corporate executives and lobbyists not be confirmed to any appointee positions.

25,000 Signatures still needed: Fight to reduce corporate power.

A Sleeping Giant

What will it take until average Americans say, "We've had enough!"? Billionaire Betsy DeVos' recent antics have once again riled up many, but are they enough to wake "the sleeping giant" of the 99%? Coast Watcher provides us with a few insights this week. (Below you'll find a link to where you can sign a petition to have Betsy fired from her job as Secretary of Education. Let them know in D.C. that we've had enough of her!)

A Sleeping Giant

by Coast Watcher

I fear all we have done is to awaken a sleeping giant and fill him with a terrible resolve. ~ Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto regarding the 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor.

That infamous attack on peacetime America woke the country to war with Japan. Senator Bernie Sander’s call to arms during the 2016 presidential election woke the people of the United States to another type of war—the class war waged by the 1% against the rest of us.While it may lack the outright violence of total warfare, the conflict is still real and often deadly.

Sheer greed is causing death through insurance companies withholding medical treatment from those in need. It’s causing death through the pharmaceutical industry’s indiscriminate promotion of opioids. It’s causing death through the usage of cancer-causing pesticides and herbicides such as Monsanto's Roundup. It’s causing death through dumping of toxic waste and floods of disease-ridden effluent from CAFOs into our water supplies. The 1% even post their mercenary police forces to guard useless and dangerous oil and gas pipelines from protesters, but those same police are nowhere to be seen when the pipelines burst and destroy the countryside.

The 1% have made strenuous efforts to suppress any and all information about their activities from reaching the general public. With 96% of all media in the hands of a few plutocrats it’s not difficult. When you compare independent news shows such as  Redacted Tonight, The Jimmy Dore Show and programs produced by Abby Martin with the output from mainstream media it’s not hard see the pattern emerging. PBS, the supposedly-neutral broadcast network has been so starved of funding by government over the years that it’s had to go cap in hand to oligarchs like the Koch brothers and the Walton family. It shouldn’t be necessary to point out that these people will dictate content, guiding programming away from areas of their corrupt businesses they don’t want the public to know about.

Unfortunately--for the 1%--the suppression of net neutrality isn’t 100% successful. Lee Camp, Jimmy Dore and Abby Martin are still out there, uncovering stories that the oligarchy doesn’t want you to know of. This humble blog is another outlet, correlating stories and information from across the globe in an effort to keep the public informed. The more the public learns about how the 1% is trying to make them go back to sleep so the oligarchs won’t be exposed for the world-wrecking gang they are, the more the public is angered by the duplicity.

A sleeping giant, once woken, has immense strength. In Jonathan Swift's Gulliver’s Travels the Lilliputians attempted to tie down the sleeping "giant" Lemuel Gulliver, but they found all their bonds failed when he sat up. So it must be that the 1%’s attempt to tie down the 99% will fail once we sit up and take notice. The Lilliputians are attempting to tie us down again, to make us go back to sleep. We must not allow that to happen. The Earth--and all that’s on it--is at stake. Stay woke. Stay alert. Fight the 1%.

BIO: Coast Watcher is determined to stay alert and ready by pouring lots of strong coffee to keep the rest of the 99% awake until the political revolution is firmly underway. He asks, "Would you like some cream and sugar with your revolution?"

From Network For Public Education Action:

For the sake of America's school children, Betsy DeVos must go. It was clear during this week's budget hearing that Ms. DeVos is not a responsible advocate for America’s children and taxpayers, but rather an ideologue who sees no place for public dollars and public institutions in the promotion of the public good.

Tell Donald Trump it is time for Betsy DeVos to be fired. Sign the petition by clicking below.

Ms. DeVos’s request to cut funding for the Special Olympics Program horrified our nation.

At the same hearing, when confronted by Congress with the enormous waste that is generated from the Charter Schools Program, as documented in our NPE report, Ms. DeVos expressed no desire to investigate their concerns. Instead she replied, “We need more charter schools, not fewer.”

Ironically, her proposed $60 million dollar increase to create more charter schools, which would bring the program’s funding to a half billion dollars next year, would pay for Special Olympics funding more than three times over.

It is time to put ideology aside and put American children first. Let's speak with one voice--and demand that she be replaced.

Congress has the opportunity to protect women from gun violence. Sign the petition now >>

Next week, the House of Representatives will be voting to reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) — a critical, multi-faceted piece of federal legislation that provides survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, dating violence, and stalking with access to justice and social services. And this year, the VAWA bill includes provisions to reduce gun violence against women by: (1) expanding federal law to keep guns away from abusive dating partners and stalkers and (2) alerting local law enforcement when domestic abusers attempt to buy guns.

The extreme NRA leadership is opposing these common-sense bipartisan policies. But we need our representatives to place a higher value on the lives of women than on an abusive boyfriend's access to guns. And we're letting Congress know just how much support there is for these gun safety provisions. Add your name to our letter urging Congress to pass the Violence Against Women Act.

ADD MY NAME
When a gun is present in a domestic violence situation, it's five times more likely that the woman will be killed by her abusive partner. Now's the time to address the deadly loopholes in federal law that let violent dating partners and stalkers keep their guns. Why would the extreme NRA leadership want guns in the hands of abusive boyfriends when we have the chance to save lives?

While the NRA tries to pressure lawmakers to vote against gun safety, we need you to take action and get this message to Congress: Protect women and save lives. With one click, automatically sign our petition urging Congress to protect women from abusive dating partners and stalkers.

From Progress America:
Seema Verma, Trump’s choice to run Medicare, spent millions in taxpayer money to try to improve her own public image - and wants to massively cut your Medicare benefits because she falsely claims they are unaffordable.

The hypocrisy couldn't be clearer. Verma is another Trump Administration hire who, like former HHS Secretary Tom Price, sees our government as a private piggybank. Like Price, Verma should resign in disgrace immediately.

Here’s a free tip for Seema Verma: If you want a good public image, don’t try to cut people’s Medicare and Medicaid. Don’t try to throw 20 million people off their health insurance. And don’t be a part of the most corrupt Presidential administration this country has ever seen.

It’s hard to stay shocked in the face of the shameless hypocrisy and public looting that goes on every day in Trump’s government. But it’s important that we not become numb to the corruption.

This isn’t normal. And the only way we can stop it is one piece at a time, until Trump and his Republican enablers are driven out of Washington.

Let’s start with Seema Verma.

Thanks,

Mike Phelan
