Priorities, People! Priorities!

"Those who can make you believe absurdities can make you commit atrocities." —Voltaire

Priorities, People! Priorities!

by C.A. Matthews

Everyone probably has had a teacher, professor, coach, boss, or parent who has shouted, “Priorities, people! Priorities!” whenever you seemed to lose focus or got distracted by something not as important as you thought it was.

I can still hear my 9th grade Algebra teacher repeatedly telling us to do our assignments first or we wouldn’t be able to pass the chapter test.

“Did you do the even numbered exercises last night? he’d challenge us. “You want to pass the test and pass this class, don’t you? Priorities, people! Priorities!”

Of course, not everyone did their homework. Not everyone passed the test or passed the class. They got distracted by something more fun than working math problems. In my era, that meant watching too much TV or listening to your latest rock LPs for hours on end instead of doing your homework. And the results of their distraction showed—in their grades then, and possibly in their lives later on because of the type of jobs they were able to get without passing Algebra. Not the good paying kind.

Becoming distracted from what is really important can lead to serious consequences. “What happened?” these distracted folks whine in confusion. They’ll blame everyone but themselves for making poor decisions by following a false priority down a dead end path.

I want to help you focus on what should be your top priorities, not because I enjoy scolding people, but because I hate seeing people suffer later, angry, because no one warned them from wandering far from what really matters.

Blood Money

Blood Money

by C.A. Matthews

Tax season in the US has to be the most stressful time of the year. Even if you’re fairly certain you’ll receive a refund and not owe anything, you still have to deal with the uncertainty of pleasing our masters. You must give them the correct figures to “appease the beast” and keep its growling belly full and its appetite satiated.

You may think it's over-exaggeration calling the US government an animal, but recent events prove my point. The US is financing and arming a genocide. It’s providing arms and aid to the ethnostate of Israel to ethnically cleanse the Palestinian people from their land in Gaza. (It is even readying to send troops into Gaza as we've learned recently after the extreme protest of Airman Aaron Bushnell.) Can you get any more beastly than encouraging the mass murder of tens of thousands of civilians and the slow starvation deaths of innocent children?

Now that we’re agreed that the US government is a beast of unparalleled proportions, what can we do about it? Do we keep feeding the beast and hope for the best that it doesn’t turn around one day and decide to devour us as well? Don't think it couldn't happen. Is this any way for us to live, in perpetual fear and loathing? How can we as prey fight back to see a world freed from the bloodthirsty hunger of the beast?

Believe it or not, We the People (prey) do have the power to slay the beast. We can deny it sustenance. We can starve it, weaken it, and when it's spinning in confusion, topple it.

Can we do this simply by refusing to pay taxes to the Feds? Good question. There have been some Americans who have done precisely that in protest against the US war machine, and they have been penalized for it with jail sentences and fines. And still, the US funding of endless wars for oil and genocide continues. It’s as if tax dollars don’t really make much of a difference one way or the other in how the US government pays for its weapons and practices warfare.

And really, why should the government tax us at all? The government doesn’t need our tax payments. It can always print more money, or produce more ones and zeroes in a computer spreadsheet, nowadays. Modern Monetary Theory (MMT) shows us how this works. There's no need for a Ft. Knox. There’s nothing backing up the US “petrodollar” except American wars and other oil resources grabs such as the one happening off the coast of Gaza. De-dollarization has begun.

So, if the government will continue to finance war-making in our names regardless to how We the People feel about it, or whether we pay our taxes or not, who really controls the war machine? Could it be that those who actually produce the weapons are the ones in control of America’s never-ending military conflicts?

When in doubt, follow the money. Who or what profits the most from the trillion dollar US “defense” budget? If you answer, “Raytheon, General Dynamics, Boeing…”  go to the head of the class! You are no dummy. You aren’t fooled by the US’s supposed democracy heralded by its paid-off politicians. You know who's the real rulers are.

In order to stop the genocide in Gaza, the genocide in the Congo, the genocide in Sudan, the ceaseless bloodbath in Ukraine, the bucks must stop here at the doors of the Military-Congressional-Industrial Complex and its supporters like AIPAC. But how do we shut off the flow of blood money to these heartless capitalist gangsters? This is where We the People need to get creative and grow a pair of whatever-gender-specific-organ that gives you courage and bravery, because it’s probably going to get worse before it gets better.

A good place to start is to find others of a like mind and become involved with organizations that are working to bleed money from corporate interests away from American politics. The Move to Amend organization is an excellent example of individuals working together to put the lobbyists for the MIC, Big Oil, Big Pharma, Big Ag, Big Insurance… out of business forever. They wish to do so by having the US Constitution amended with a "We the People Amendment" stating that all elections must be fair and equal and federally funded—no money from corporations, billionaires, or their lobbyists allowed.

The Move to Amend movement has been around for some time and receives endorsements from some Congress members, but so far it’s a no go. Neither the House or the Senate has held a vote on the proposal. It appears that Congress members are willing to put their names on it for good marketing purposes but nothing more. Perhaps one day the 28th amendment will come about, but in the meantime, it cannot be our only action.

What else can we be do to shut down the war machine? Move the Money (to Human Needs) is an organization which is working to help to take money away from the war machine, thus denying it of funding. Detroit recently became the biggest US city so far to pass a resolution that calls on Congress and the president to shift public money away from the military to fund social services. The Michigan Peace Council was a major backer of the campaign to win the resolution. It came on the same day that nearly 101,000 Michiganders voted “Uncommitted” in the Democratic primary to oppose Biden’s support for Israel’s genocide against the Palestinian people.

Halting the funding of the military industrial complex is like draining the blood out of the beast. It takes time, but it’s doable. Is there anything else we can do simultaneously while we’re denying the beast of its insatiable need of money? Yes, there is. We can expose its supporters and manufacturers of armaments to the world at large. We can get them where they’re most vulnerable, in their public relations area.

Scrolling my Twitter (X) feed some days can be uplifting because there are so many videos of protests and strikes happening in the US and around the world that are each in their own small way helping to bring about the death of the beast. From attending politicians’ speeches (including Genocide Joe Biden’s) and shouting for the end of the genocide and all wars, to protesting in front of or on top of the headquarters of arms manufacturers, such as Israel’s Elbit Systems, We the People are making our wishes known. We are the majority. We know where they're making the instruments of death:

Here's Every US Factory Making Bombs for Israel: https://youtu.be/ETtAGRvO33w?si=aiVcXY9iwGnJecO3

We’re tired of the blood of innocents being spilled. We’re tired of watching the slaughter of our neighbors worldwide for the sole reason of making billionaire CEOs and their puppet-politicians ever richer. We’re making our voices heard, and we’re engendering fear in these purveyors of death and destruction.

Protesting and general strikes, especially those events involving large numbers, are more effective than you may realize. The beast thrives on pretending that it only commits these unspeakable horrors out of a need to protect our “freedom and democracy” (TM). We all know this to be complete and utter bullshit.

The fact that a New Jersey real estate agent is now selling stolen Palestinian properties in the West Bank to American Zionists negates the idea that the US is supporting "freedom and democracy" in apartheid Israel. The fact that the US and other NATO countries cut off funding to UNRWA because Israel told them twelve United Nations staff members were part of "Hamas," which has since been proven to be false, negates that. In fact, new evidence shows that Israel actually tortured (waterboarded) these UN workers into making false confessions. How "democratic" is that?

By standing together in a public space and shouting the lies back at the liars, We the People take charge. The beast finds itself increasingly cornered and isolated. By boycotting (BDS) any products that are funding our enemy's' evil actions, We the People make the beast realize its days are numbered.

We the People aren’t hiding in corners anymore, shivering in our shoes, acting like prey creatures ready to be eaten. We’re growing stronger, growing in numbers, and growing in our resolve to overcome the beast. We will consume the beast whole like a pack of mice nibbling on a wounded lion. We’ll eat it up bit by bit, but, in the end, the beast will be eaten. And that’s why it fears us.

We’ll no longer have to cry about the blood on our hands when we at last turn off the flow of blood money. Then true freedom and democracy will reign.

Bullets v. Ballots or...?

Day X is here…

This blog will post just before Julian Assange goes before the court in London for his extradition hearing on February 20-21. To keep up with the latest news on him, please tune in to the Indie News Network for updates: https://www.indiemediatoday.com/

An update on the Ceasefire in Gaza resolution that Toledo City Council has dragged its feet on for the past several months: It has finally passed! It passed “unanimously” (or at least the council members who were actually there all voted for it). This is a huge relief to all the people who have put so much time and energy into seeing it pass

It’s probably no coincidence the resolution's passage happened after Biden’s poll numbers took a huge dive because he couldn’t give the correct names of the presidents of Egypt and Mexico. The Democrats on council might have felt now was the time to divert away from their party’s stance on refusing to acknowledge that a genocide in Gaza is actually happening and that a ceasefire is necessary. Rest assured, politicians don’t do things out of the goodness of their hearts without first checking in with local party leaders for their okay to vote yes. But a win is still a win, and it was well-deserved. Power to the People!

Now onto this week's topic.

Bullets v. Ballots or...?

by C.A. Matthews

After the third online discussion on pretty much the same topic within a week, you start to notice a pattern: Folks are fed up.

The revolution isn’t happening quickly enough or at all. The same corrupt puppet-politicians are still in power. The workers are being oppressed by capitalist bosses who don’t give a damn about the harm they inflict upon their employees or the earth itself. Endless war is waged to line the pockets of Big Oil and MIC CEOs. Genocide is openly practiced and applauded by sycophantic politicos and celebrities alike. A human life is only worth whatever a billionaire says it is.

Gaza today

Get the picture?

What are we to do about it? There are two major schools of thought on this topic that can be summarized as follows: The revolution will come about through either 1) bullets or 2) ballots.

That’s it. It comes down to fighting our way out of this oppressive, corrupt system by using good ol’ fashioned firepower, that is, guns and ammo, or by using the power of the vote or ballot box.

Tempers have been strained these past four months watching innocent children and civilians being slaughtered in Gaza. Palestinian homes and refugees have been pulverized. Most Americans are heartsick and angry, totally at a lost as to how to stop the killing. If there’s anything positive to come from this horrendous loss of life, it’s that most Westerners don’t see their governments as the “good guys” any longer.

Eyes have been opened. They don’t like what they see. Those brainwashed into thinking they live in a “democracy” now know better. “Freedom and democracy” cannot be created though military strikes and conquests. Military excursions are just that—a use of deadly force to take what another country or people possess. If you want the land itself, you bomb the inhabitants into rubble or push them into someone else’s backyard. (In Gaza’s case, this means Egypt.)

“Freedom and democracy” are imaginary constructs used to manipulate Westerners into cooperating with their imaginary democratically elected governments. The so-called “major parties” in any Western country are about as genuine as a $3 bill. The partisans work for the same bosses everywhere, the billionaires (oligarchs), and not for their lowly constituents.

Sure, on occasion our elected officials might throw us a bone to get us off their backs. This happened this past week when the Toledo City Council finally passed a Ceasefire in Gaza resolution after three months of tortuous protests, intense email and phone call campaigns, and painful public statements made by individuals who have lost family members in the genocide. Not passing the ceasefire resolution could have very well spelled an end to the council members’ political careers at this point. Pro-Palestine protests have exposed politicians for the sociopaths they are, breaking the illusion of “freedom and democracy” and “justice for all” Americans supposedly enjoy.

We the People are “free” to live in the falsehood of a “democracy” that allows 60,000 Americans to die each year due to lack of health care. Westerners are “free” to live in a “democracy” that ethnically cleanses a whole population in order to steal their oil and land resources while allowing white settler colonialism to flourish. Or we are free to rise up and take out the puppet-politicians and the billionaires by use of force.

A lot of folks online think that force or the “bullet” is the only effective solution to bring about revolution. Obviously, the ballot has failed us—just look at the example of Toledo City Council. But I’m not convinced the bullet is anymore effective than the ballot. Consider this: Western governments have bombs and nuclear weapons and large organized military forces called “Armies”. We the ordinary people have nothing close to approximating their firepower, and we never will.

A bunch of angry citizens running around with shotguns and pistols will not be able to take out a professional military force using the latest in weaponry and tactics. Sorry, but it won’t work. We can’t do it because we will not lay aside our differences with our fellow citizens in order to organize and train sufficiently to be able to take on a professional army. Governments have endless bombs to drop on any uprising that occurs. Plus, they have friendly fellow governments to help out when they need it. Just look at how readily the US helps Israel in conducting its genocide against the Palestinians.

Sorry for the cold splash of water in the face, revolutionaries. In the bullet v. the ballot argument, we are not organized enough, and we are not on the same footing weapons-wise as the corrupt government we wish to do away with. But the ballot? It has problems, too. We just have to look at our elected officials and see how they do as their wealthy donors tell them to do. Billionaires rule.

Neither the bullet nor the ballot alone are able to bring about the revolution we seek. Could combining them be effective? Possibly if the government we wish to overthrow doesn’t have a professional military. We’re screwed if it does. Violence is never the answer.

The “major parties” only nominate candidates they’re assured will do the bidding of their billionaire donors. Voting under these circumstances isn’t the answer. It’s time to add another “B” to the bullet/ballot scenario of revolution: Brains.

We the People may be poor and lacking firepower, but we’re not stupid. Our corrupt governments run by puppets of the wealthy assume we’re mentally deficient because we’ve allowed their corrupt politicians to take power. But what the billionaires and their puppets don’t realize is how frustrated ordinary folks have become. They don’t seem to realize that desperate people are not afraid to try new tactics and learn new skills in order to survive and thrive.

Using our brains, we can bring about the revolution we desire.

The BDS Movement (Boycott, Divest, and Sanction) is one example of using brains and not bullets or ballots to make a point. We pressure the real power behind the politicians—the corporations—to stop doing business with people
and countries we don’t like and want to see go away. McDonald’s has experienced huge losses because of the boycott of their restaurants worldwide by those who support the Palestinian cause.

We could kill off the military-industrial-Congressional-complex this way if we really worked hard at it. McDonald’s and other corporations stop doing business with Israel and wham! Israel is too broke to keep buying armaments from Western nations. The Israeli government is weakened and overthrown by those who want to end the genocide and bring about a true democracy in that part of the world.

Along with the BDS, the power of the strike could be wielded as a weapon of brains. Workers organized and striking could bring down major corporations and industries that have harmed our planet with their endless wars for oil and their insistence on building nuclear weapons. A nationwide General Strike or, even better, a Global General Strike is the power of the people on steroids. We’re talking millions or billions or human beings striking against corrupt governments everywhere on the globe at once. Yes, there is the risk of bullets—mostly coming from the weakened corporations-governments who want to terrify the workers back into the factories—but possibly if we’re organized enough to run a Global General Strike effectively, we can effectively organize militia units to protect our fellow workers on the picket lines.

Brains and ballots
can be used effectively together when we organize ourselves to support candidates and issues that take out the corrupt government. One recent example in the US is the “Abandon Biden” movement. Arab Americans are not going to reward Genocide Joe Biden with their votes, and they’re not making any promises that they ever will support his party ever again. This organized method of creating a massive voting bloc can wake up the powers-that-be and prove to them that we’re not stupid. We’re not cooperating with their evil intentions, and we’re not afraid to deny them power.

If a General Strike and the BDS tactics are added to this massive voting bloc to take out the “major parties” in the US, then We the People could become stronger than any army in history. But we will need to be united on whom we will support in order to prevent Biden or his evil twin Trump from taking power again. My suggestion is to support a strong alternative party candidate who will have wide ballot access and is clearly on the people’s side. And there is one such individual who is currently rising in the polls that fits this definition: Dr. Jill Stein of the Green Party. (The Green Party US does not accept money from corporations or PACs.)

I know there are those who will still moan that the ballot box is ineffective—especially in the US where rigged voting machines are not unheard of—but give me a chance to explain this tactic further. By voting in large numbers for Jill Stein, Americans will be making a very strong message that we’ve caught onto the major parties’ crooked methods. We’re not playing along with them and their billionaire donors any longer. Throw in a General Strike or a series of wildcat strikes, BDS tactics, teach-ins, sit-ins, protests and other outpourings of anti-oligarchy sentiment, and we will have seriously messed with the minds of the powers-that-be. The use of our collective brain power will cause confusion and panic in the ranks of the elites and their puppet-politicians.

Mistakes will be made by our oppressors that We the People can take advantage of to our ultimate benefit. If the government resorts to rigging the election, we can up our strikes, protests and other tactics to expose their treachery. That's what independent media and journalism is for, helping the people tell their side of things.

If the government resorts to violence, then we can return the same with a clear conscience that we didn’t instigate it. We are only protecting ourselves from tyranny. We are true patriots, and they are despots. Who would blame us for standing up to evil?

What have we got to lose by exposing the corrupt puppets and their billionaire donors in such a fashion? Propaganda is meant to keep the people in line. When we’re in control of making the headlines through indie media, then the propaganda narrative of Western governments will cease to exist and so will they. We will become the story.

Bullets v. Ballots doesn’t quite give us the credit we’re due. We the People have brains, too. If we organize and use them wisely, the future is ours.

Fourteen Years and Counting

Fourteen Years and Counting

by C. A. Matthews

Most of us can remember our “first, real paying job.” For Americans, we were most likely in high school, and a classmate mentioned to us between classes how their boss was looking for more summer workers and that we should apply and make some money. I had been babysitting for our neighbors since I was about twelve years old, but it was very hit and miss work, and there was a lot of competition on our street. This was my chance to enter the “real paying job world” at age sixteen. I road my bicycle a couple of miles from my home to interview and got the gig. I worked a long, hot and stormy summer standing on my feet for eight hour shifts in a soft-serve ice cream walk-up stand along Main Street and made the huge sum of $1.25 per hour for about 32 hours of work per week.

Hard to believe $1.25 an hour was considered "good pay,"but that was the state’s minimum wage for “tipped employees” at that time. All restaurant workers were paid that amount hourly. It didn’t matter that we didn’t get tipped making ice cream cones for folks who walked up to the window. We were still considered “food service workers” and paid that lowly wage. I worked hard that summer and ended up getting a raise—a whole $1.35 per hour.

Wow. I thought I’d had it made.

The next summer, a friend told me about a job working at a warehouse clearance sale for a national franchised dress shop located in our local “mall,” a newfangled place built on the east side of town and not located downtown where a few of the big department stores were still to be found. I was overjoyed when I heard what this job paid—a whole $2.35 an hour! It was the federal minimum wage. It was what older people made working similar jobs, so I really felt like an adult at age seventeen. Even though I spent a lot on clothes with my employee discount of 10% off that summer, I saved a bit of money that I later used to get ready for college.

Almost a half century and many jobs later, the federal minimum wage hasn’t moved upward all that much when adjusted for inflation. For the past fourteen years, the federal minimum wage has been stuck at $7.25. But why? Corporate profits are up practically across the board or so we’re told on the nightly news. CEOs get huge bonus packages. “Bidenomics is working,” neoliberals insist. What’s wrong with us if we’re struggling to get by in the midst of all this “booming economy” we’re told exists in the US today?

Maybe it’s not us who are wrong about the reality of our situations. Consider this:

The federal minimum wage in the United States would be more than $42 an hour today if it rose at the same rate as the average Wall Street bonus over the past four decades, according to an analysis … by the Institute for Policy Studies.

Citing newly released data from the New York State Comptroller, IPS noted that the average Wall Street bonus has increased by 1,165% since 1985, not adjusted for inflation.

Last year, the average cash bonus paid to Wall Street employees was $176,700—75% higher than in 2008 but slightly lower than the 2021 level of $240,400.

The federal minimum wage, meanwhile, has been completely stagnant since 2009, when it was bumped up to $7.25 from $5.15. While many states and localities have approved substantial pay increases in recent years, 20 states have kept their hourly wage floors at the federal minimum.

US Minimum Wage Would Be $42 Today If It Rose as Much as Wall St.Bonuses: Analysis

So, where’s our $42 per hour? I guess it’s in the same place where our $600 went when we were promised $2,000 COVID relief checks when Biden took office, but we only received $1,400, right?

What’s a working stiff in the US to do? We can’t even afford to rent an apartment anywhere in the fifty states working full-time hours (if you can get them) at $7.25 an hour. There have been talks and protests centered around raising the federal minimum wage to $15 an hour, but can anyone even afford to rent a decent place to live on that amount? It’s doubtful. Not even a $25 minimum wage can help a family rent a home in many cities.

American workers do have one powerful option, but it’s rarely been discussed since Reagan took office. We have the ability to strike—if we’re not forbidden to do so by federal law, such as the case with railroad workers or air traffic controllers, that is. But so many Americans have been brainwashed into thinking that a strike will cost them their job and their health insurance, so they simply won’t consider it.

Are Americans cowards? Not necessarily. I’d say we’re realists. We know we have no safety nets like workers in other countries who are blessed with universal health care and universal basic income or "UBI" payments. With no way to provide for our families without our lousy paying jobs, we’d best stay put and put up with the harsh treatment of the bosses.

But are strikes really all that risky for workers? Where did we get this idea that we the working class are essentially powerless and only billionaires can get what they want? Consider this:

The Teamsters Union and UPS have reached a tentative agreement on a new contract to cover the 340,000 Teamsters who work for the package shipping giant.

According to a statement released by the union, the new contract is “the most historic tentative agreement for workers in the history of UPS,” promising wage increases, an end to the two-tier wage system, new air conditioning in vehicles, Martin Luther King Jr. Day as a full company holiday, and more.

In the days and weeks to come, members will debate the pros and cons of the proposal as thousands of UPS Teamsters vote on whether to ratify the contract. But one thing seems undeniable: Any significant gains won by Teamsters against a reluctant employer will have come about because rank-and-file workers showed the company that they were prepared to strike.

UPS Workers Disproved Corporate Media’s Narrative That Strikes AreHarmful

I put that last sentence in italics for emphasis. It bears repeating: Any significant gains won by Teamsters against a reluctant employer will have come about because rank-and-file workers showed the company that they were prepared to strike.

Rank-and-file workers actually have power? Yes, we do! Even the possibility of a strike can motivate a reluctant employer to sit down and discuss the workers’ grievances and demands. And if push comes to shove, the workers walk out and give the employers even more to worry about as the company's profits take a hit and its reputation as being a fair and honest employer is thrown into the dumpster.

Fourteen years of a stagnant federal minimum wage (with no maximum wage for billionaires set) and no universal health coverage for all Americans should be a wake up call even for the sleepiest of workers. Our government doesn’t work for us, the people, but for those who already have more than enough wealth and power and obviously don’t give care one bit about how many workers can’t even afford to rent an apartment or put food on the table for their families. Our government doesn’t care if we or our loved ones get sick, and we have no way to afford medical care other than to beg strangers for donations via GoFundMe.

Face it, America. It’s time to lose the blind loyalty to both your employers and to our government. They don’t have our best interests at heart. And we have the power to make them see things our way—strike!
