Climate Change Meets Government Denial

Climate Change Meets Government Denial
by Coast Watcher

Donald Trump reached a new low point in his behavior this past week. After a press conference in Corpus Christi, he addressed the crowd outside with the remarks "Thank you everybody. What a crowd! What a turnout!" It's language more suited to a campaign rally than a speech to people suffering the aftermath of one of the worst natural disasters to hit the United States in recorded history. He went on to thank Texas governor Gregg Abbott for doing a "fantastic job" - this to a governor who turned down an offer of help from the Canadian province of  Québec, asking for their prayers instead.

Trump's predictably superficial visit to a region reeling under the impact of Hurricane Harvey did little to alleviate the situation. His personal donation of $1 million would be a drop in the bucket of the costs needed to restore the situation - oh, and Trump's legal problems will probably tie-up that donation so it'll never go through.
The event ended without Trump sending any compassionate word to those still awaiting rescue, or the families whose loved ones are among the approximately thirty souls already known to have perished in the disaster.

As if this were not bad enough, Trump later visited a relief shelter in Houston, where he said "They were just happy. We saw a lot of happiness. It's been really nice. It's been a wonderful thing. As tough as this was, it's been a wonderful thing, I think even for the country to watch and for the world to watch. It's been beautiful."

People who have lost everything don't tend to be happy, Mr. Trump. There's nothing beautiful about a deadly hurricane that took innocent lives. The American people and the world did not enjoy seeing the fourth largest city in the United States flooding under nature's onslaught.

The effects of Hurricane Harvey are projected to be the costliest disaster in the nation's history, with the heaviest rainfall ever recorded in the continental United States - 49 inches, with more to come. The rainfall inundated a number of cities, including Houston. Relief efforts and search and rescue operations are ongoing. Most of the work is being done by a vast army of volunteers who have stepped up to help their fellow humans in their time of need. It must be pointed out that much of the rescue work is taking place in floodwaters contaminated by the toxic products of the petrochemical industry that dominates the area.

Trump had announced cuts to the tune of $876 million from the Federal Emergency Management Agency budget in order to redirect the funds to build his border wall with Mexico. These cuts have since been reassessed in the light of recent events. Trump has also remained silent on the invaluable assistance coming from Mexico to help in relief efforts. How's that wall idea working for you now, Mr. Trump?

Trump claims climate change is a conspiracy propagated by China to hurt the US economy. Texas governor Gregg Abbott is another denier, even though the effects of dramatically changing weather patterns have literally manifested on his doorstep. (Watch this short video and see the changing temperatures for yourself. It will amaze you how fast the entire planet has been heating up.)

Dr. James Hansen, the former top climate scientist at NASA and current director at Climate Science, Awareness and Solutions at Columbia University’s Earth Institute, recently stated: “With the beginning of changes in atmospheric composition, caused mainly by burning fossil fuels, the planet is getting warmer, and sea level has begun to go up, because the ocean is getting warmer and because ice is melting.” He continued: “The amount of water vapor in the atmosphere is increasing because the atmosphere is getting warmer, and therefore the amount of water being dumped during these storms is larger because of human-made global warming. Thunderstorms, tornadoes, tropical storms all get their energy from the latent energy of water vapor. There are substantial human-made effects on these storms.”

Trump soon jetted away from Houston, leaving the people of Texas to deal with their calamity. Undoubtedly there will decades of recovery ahead for the city. He achieved little but a new demonstration of his crassness and boorish behavior.

This week Trump announced that U.S. Representative Jim Bridenstine (R-OK) is his nominee as NASA Administrator. Bridenstine is a Navy veteran who, since taking up politics, has served on both the Science, Space and Technology Committee and the House Armed Services Committee.  In 2013, Bridenstine gave a speech on the House floor filled with standard climate denial talking points and gave a demand that President Obama apologize for funding research into climate science.

“Mr. Speaker, global temperatures stopped rising 10 years ago,” claimed Bridenstine, “Global temperature changes, when they exist, correlate with sun output and ocean cycles.”

The Trump administration will continue to deny man's  influence on climate change, and killer storms will continue to increase in strength. Who will give in first? In this case, Harvey definitely has the edge.

The Draft Bernie for a People's Party movement will be gathering in Washington D.C. this weekend for the People's Convergence Conference. They will present a petition to Senator Bernie Sanders to form a new progressive party on Friday, September 8. Bernie Delegates make an impassioned plea to their beloved leader in the following video.

What do you think? Will Bernie join the new party? Will others form one instead? What will it take to convince him? Leave your comments in the comment box at the end of this week's blog. Thank you.

Here are some ways to help those in Texas and speak out against climate change denial.

Courtesy of the Jim Hightower Newsletter:
Friends,
Thousands in our state are suffering because of Hurricane Harvey and spillover flooding since this weekend. Our Revolution Texas members are among them. Many of us around the state are wondering how we can volunteer and donate to help the many in hard-hit areas. We all know that showing solidarity in trying times is an important part of what we do and why we do it as progressive populists.
In the Houston Area
If you have a flat-bottomed boat or a high-water vehicle, you are urgently needed. Call 713-881-3100. If you are in need of immediate help from a life-threatening emergency call 9-1-1. If you are or know others in need of non-emergency help call 3-1-1 in Houston or 2-1-1 in nearby areas.

Outside Houston
Local relief groups, progressive organizations, unions, and immigrant rights groups are already mobilizing grassroots relief efforts. Here is a list of groups and efforts you can plug into to help:
The Texas Workers Relief Fund. A union-relief effort by the Texas AFL-CIO, donations are tax-deductible. The state fed has been closely coordinating with the Houston and Corpus-area central labor councils to provide material aid.

RNRN Disaster Relief Fund. Our ally the National Nurses United organizes medical relief for major disasters through this fund.

Texas DSA. DSA chapters (also allies) have been organizing both volunteers and those in need at a grassroots level. Sign up here to offer help (or ask for it) or donate directly to Houston DSA.

Coastal Bend Disaster Recovery Group Fund. If you want to donate directly for relief in the Coastal Bend towns hit directly by the hurricane.

Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund. Houston's mayor has set up this fund to assist with victims of Houston's ongoing and increasingly dangerous flooding. Donations are tax-deductible.

The extreme enforcement policies of SB4 and ICE have put immigrant workers in increased harm's way through the crisis. Immigrant and refugee groups such as RAICES in San Antonio are moving to get aid directly to immigrant families. Jumping in now is just the beginning.

In solidarity,
Chris Kutalik-Cauthern

From Greenpeace:

The images and stories are heartbreaking.
Overcrowded shelters. Thousands stranded by floodwaters. Hazardous chemicals released from Gulf Coast oil facilities — the list seems endless. Hurricane Harvey has affected tens of thousands of lives, and we’re only at the beginning of finding out the full impact.

Over the past few days, it has been inspiring to see the response by community members, first responders, and frontline organizations to Hurricane Harvey. If there is hope in this ongoing crisis, it’s in being reminded that in times of great challenge, communities across the nation can be depended upon to show up and help. We are all in this together — that’s why it is so critical for the Greenpeace family to stand with people facing the storm’s impacts. Please consider offering what you can.

To find out ways you can help, visit this source for frontline-to-frontline direct resource and support mobilization from our friends at Another Gulf is Possible.

The human impacts of Hurricane Harvey have been staggering, and our greatest concern is for the people struggling in its aftermath. Coastal Texas and the wider Gulf region are on the frontlines of sea level rise and extreme weather heightened by climate change, as well as the toxic threats posed by fossil fuel infrastructure. We know that climate change made Harvey more deadly1. As global temperatures increase, sea level rise and extreme weather becomes an even bigger threat to communities at home and around the world.

Stopping the worst effects of climate change should be a top priority of the Trump administration. Instead, the administration refuses to even acknowledge the problem exists, is allowing more climate changing pollution, and is putting more communities in harm’s way2. Harvey shows that a policy of denial and willful ignorance results in structural injustice3. Poorer communities and people of color often have less means to evacuate, live in neighborhoods with worse flooding4, live closer to damaged fossil fuel facilities releasing hazardous chemicals5, and tend to have fewer resources for recovery, including backup housing and flood insurance6.

Trump and his enablers must be held accountable for not only refusing to do the basics to stop climate change in the future but also for refusing to protect coastal communities from the climate change-fueled disasters right now. We must continue our fight against the fossil fuel industry and the climate change-denying Trump Administration. And we must push for a different future — one built on clean, renewable energy with safe secure jobs. It’s not just important, it’s imperative, for people and the planet.

For people affected by this disastrous storm, a long, hard road lies ahead. We have to start now to ensure an equitable recovery, one that brings relief and comfort to all. If you have a few minutes, please visit this site to find out how you can help the communities affected by Hurricane Harvey.

Thank you for all your continued work to protect people and the environment.

The tragedy of the devastating flooding from Hurricane Harvey has already cost dozens of lives, with tens of thousands of families flooded out of their homes, and hundreds of billions of dollars needed to help Houston and surrounding communities along the Texas-Louisiana Gulf Coast recover.

In addition, we have to think more broadly about the ravages of climate change. In the same week as Harvey, torrential rains have caused mudslides in Sierra Leone that have claimed more than 1,000 lives, and the worst monsoon storms in South Asia have resulted in flooding that has killed more than 1,200 people across India, Nepal, and Bangladesh. Twentieth century infrastructure is not equipped to handle this new climate reality, and our over-reliance on fossil fuels has only exacerbated the effects of a warming climate.

In times of global crisis, the United States has always striven to be a leader. The future of our planet is in peril, but we have the capacity to expand newly innovated technologies on a massive scale. Like Franklin Delano Roosevelt established the Tennessee Valley Authority at the height of the Great Depression to bring new technology to vast swathes of our country, creating millions of new jobs in the process, we need a modern day initiative to transition away from fossil fuels and embrace renewable energy.

Members of Congress like Senators Bernie Sanders and Jeff Merkley, Representatives Raul Grijalva, Tulsi Gabbard, Pramila Jayapal, and many others have introduced strong pieces of legislation to rapidly transition our economy off of fossil fuels to renewable energy. We must come together as one nation and one people by supporting these efforts and more—sign our petition demanding Congress act on climate now.
No matter an individual's party affiliation, global climate change is a crisis that demands cooperation and coordination amongst our political parties and the countries of the world.

We cannot predict natural disasters, but we can work to mitigate the worst effects of human-caused climate change. There is still time to act to ensure tragedies like we have seen in the Gulf Coast, Sierra Leone, South Asia, and regions around the world do not get worse.

Now is the time for change. Incrementalism is no longer a viable option. Your leadership in the global climate movement can help to ensure a better future.

Climate Hawks Vote

Tell the Senate:
Stop Jim Bridenstine
Add your name »

Trump just nominated an anti-science climate denier to run NASA.

Jim Bridenstine is not a scientist. He’s a member of Congress with no experience in space. And he has an ugly history of anti-science rants. On the House floor in 2013, Bridenstine demanded President Obama apologize for dedicating federal resources to studying climate change, citing junk science and outright lies to justify his assertion that climate change isn't real. (It was warm once, before cars even existed!)

Add your nameBridenstine's nomination is already being criticized by the two senators from Florida, Marco Rubio and Bill Nelson, because NASA should be run by a scientist. Or, at the very least, someone who respects and listens to scientific fact rather than a career politician.

NASA’s earth sciences division is at the forefront of climate change research. NASA’s satellites provide critical data on matters such as Hurricanes Harvey and Irma. The Trump regime has already cut back NASA's climate research. But Bridenstine would do much more damage to NASA and federal climate research.

Your fellow climate hawk,

Why Do They Lie About Progressives?

Why Do They Lie About Progressives?
(But Still Want Us To Like Them)
by Still Bernin'

The following two videos from The Jimmy Dore Show say a lot about the people who slur progressive activists and candidates:

Why do these DNC corporate-money-lovers seem so bitter and angry? Bernie Sanders is still the most popular politician in the country, and his progressive stances on universal health care, a living wage, and free college education (among others) are extremely popular with the majority of Americans. If anything, shouldn't they welcome Bernie into their fold and accept and promote these progressive ideas so they can regain seats in Congress and in state houses across the nation?

Jimmy Dore says it well: "They'd rather lose to Trump than win with a progressive." Another telling quote about the Democrats: "You're just Republicans in Democrat clothing." By labeling Bernie-supporters as the "alt-left," the corporate Dems seek to marginalize and shut out true progressives in the party. However, in doing so they've created even more outspoken progressives. They don't seem to realize they've sown the seeds of their own destruction. Even the corporatists' selection of Senator Kamala Harris as their "Clinton substitute" has backfired, as Jimmy shows in the video below:

"Doing the same things over and over again and expecting different results is the definition of sanity," jokes Jimmy. So, corporate Democrats think Harris is perfect to run in the 2020 presidential election? A younger version of Hillary Clinton, Harris has her own scandals to deal with, such as not prosecuting current Secretary of the Treasury Steve Mnuchin while she was California's Attorney General after Mnuchin committed thousands of illegal foreclosures. A "winning" choice? An honest progressive candidate? Yeah, right.

Harris is "progressive" and doesn't support single payer health care? Uh-huh. She takes lobbyist money and says she's for the people? Does the DNC think we really believe that? You know what I say to the Democrats? "Would you buy the Brooklyn Bridge from me? I'll sell it to you cheap!" (In other words, once conned, it's easy to see through a con artist's tricks. We're onto your tactics, DNC.)

The corporate Dems must believe true progressives are so gullible we'll fall for their blatant lies without blinking an eye. Luckily for us, we're not quite that naive, and we voice our objections loudly. It's why the corrupt DNC is so frustrated with us and will continue to act out their fears and prejudice by smearing progressives and creating distractions such as Russiagate to take the focus off their move to the right.

No, the Democrats are not a "centrist party"  as they tout. In the last 30 years, they've transformed themselves into a right-wing party by taking large sums of money from billionaire oligarchs. You haven't seen the DNC come out to support the Move to Amend organization, to rid us of the Citizens United ruling, have you? It's deliberate--I don' t think they just forgot about it. They want to keep their super-rich donors happy. Money is speech, especially when you're filling the Dems' war chest coffers.

Those who think that the Democratic Party can be changed from the inside, consider this: Is joining them worth it? Once inside, will you find yourself sucked under into their quagmire of greed and deceit? Will you find yourself trapped and unable to escape with your integrity intact?

Now, more than ever, it's time to say good-bye to the Dems. Any party that feels rigging their own primary elections is a good thing isn't honorable. Making a deal with a less than honorable organization is bound to lead to heartache. It's time for a fresh start--and Draft Bernie for a People's Party is there, ready to pick up the pieces of the self-destructive Democratic Party and support progressive candidates to fill the empty slots left behind by these money-loving lie mongerers.

If you can't bring yourself to trust a new and untested party, why not try an older third party, the Green Party. With a motto of "people, planet and peace over profits," you can't go wrong there as a progressive. Whichever path you choose, choose one that you can live with and one that reflects your morality. Never join a group out of fear or coercion. You'll only regret it later, like so many ex-Dems are doing now.

Progressives believe in a future where all are free from the shackles of poverty and fear. Progressives believe in a future where the people's needs are ranked well above billionaires' needs to make obscene corporate profits. Let us walk confidently into that future--not crawl in fear in the shadows of the establishment factions. Break the two-party habit today. You--and your future--will be glad you did.

Read this very comprehensive piece on Kamala Harris to see what the corporate Dems like about her. It ain't pretty stuff: https://www.pastemagazine.com/articles/2017/08/in-kamala-harris-the-establishment-has-its-champio.html

Dr. Cornel West tells us exactly what the Democrats have delivered over the past 100 days--disappointment: https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2017/apr/24/democrats-delivered-one-thing-100-days-disappointment?CMP=share_btn_gp

In a related story, here's an update from Our Revolution about the People's Platform petition and the Summer for Progress activism. Do you feel the DNC is getting the message? Nina Turner and other progressives stood at their front doors in Washington D.C., and the Dems still wouldn't let them in. Can we assume they'll change their corporatist ways?

Over 100,000 of you signed our petition in support of the People's Platform, but when we went to deliver it to DNC headquarters they did not appreciate our presence. Despite the attendance of current and former DNC officials and Members of Congress in our group, we were shut out from entering the building. Citizens engaging in the democratic process deserve better and despite what happened, we will continue pushing for policies that enhance the quality of life for all.

We cannot wait for change, we need to make the change we want to see happen. Together, we made the DNC “Feel the Bern” last summer with sustained grassroots pressure and adopted the most progressive platform in the Democratic Party's modern history, but since then they have pushed back at every turn. We need to show House Democrats that our grassroots movement is more powerful than the party establishment. Will you donate $3, or however much you can afford to help Our Revolution continue our campaign and keep the pressure on for our Summer for Progress?

Unlike the presidential primaries where millions of independent voters were barred from state primaries and caucuses, our push for the People's Platform does not restrict people based on arcane party rules—it's just about us. With the full participation of voters of all party affiliations who believe in our progressive ideals and the People's Platform, we can present a united front that is more powerful than the sequestered party elites who resist the change we need to see. It is time to make the Democratic Party “Feel the Bern” again.

The DNC may think that they can continue working behind closed doors, but they will know different when millions of us come knocking.

In solidarity,

Nina Turner

Take action this week--

Betsy Southerland worked for the EPA for 30 years. This week, she resigned.
Southerland, a director at the Office of Water, called out Trump and Scott Pruitt’s blatant disregard for protecting public health and safety in a scathing exit letter. Here’s an excerpt:

“Today the environmental field is suffering from the temporary triumph of myth over truth. The truth is there is NO war on coal, there is NO economic crisis caused by environmental protection, and climate change IS caused by man’s activities. The majority of the American people recognize that this protection of public health and safety is right and it is just.”

The EPA was created to protect our health and safety, not cater to big business. Add your name to stand with Betsy and fight this administration’s attempts to dismantle the EPA.

Trump and Pruitt have steadily been trying to undermine and sabotage the EPA since they arrived. They’ve fired dozens of scientists and have given jobs to their buddies in the fossil fuel industry. They’ve torn up or scaled back environmental regulations, including one that protects children from brain damage-causing pesticides. They’re already being sued by multiple states.

States shouldn’t have to sue the EPA for access to clean air and water. The interests of the American people should come before those of the fossil fuel industry. And lifelong employees like Betsy, dedicated to protecting public health and safety, shouldn’t be forced to quit.

Add your name to stand with Betsy and against Trump’s EPA sabotage.

Thanks for standing in solidarity with science.

Verizon Wireless was just caught in the act of what looks like a blatant violation net neutrality.

Last week, without warning or permission from its customers, Verizon throttled bandwidth speeds down to 10Mbs. Users trying to stream video or use certain apps were caught in an internet slow lane and couldn't do anything about it.

But because of Title II net neutrality protections, the press has called the company out.1

Verizon, AT&T, and Comcast have argued that they should be able to regulate net neutrality on their own, without FCC rules. Verizon just proved why we can never let that happen.
Will you chip in $5 to help fight for net neutrality?

Verizon has argued that it was performing a "test" on bandwidth that was perfectly legal.2 But the truth is that Verizon can brazenly break net neutrality rules because it has confidence that FCC Chairman Ajit Pai—a former Verizon attorney—will dismantle net neutrality and let the company off the hook.

The 2.5 million comments our Day of Action to Save Net Neutrality generated to the FCC show that the public is united against the Trump FCC's repeal of net neutrality.

As for the CEOs of AT&T, Comcast, and Verizon—they have turned down the invitation to speak before Congress and defend their stance.3 They know that there is no public good argument in favor of disbanding net neutrality rules.

Instead, the telecom industry is relying on the over $25 million in campaign donations it made during last year's election to convince Congress to support Pai's effort to destroy net neutrality.4

Our voices need to be louder than Comcast's checkbook. We are continuing our fight for net neutrality and organizing meetings across the country to put pressure on the FCC and Congress to keep Title II protections in place.
Will you chip in $5 to help stand up for net neutrality against Verizon and Comcast?

Thanks for standing with us,

Caught Up In The Covfefe

Caught Up In The Covfefe

"Trump did it again," my husband said to me as I sat half-awake at the breakfast table.

My first thought was that he'd insulted another European leader and even now the nukes were being launched and headed our way. Oh, well, at least we don't have to worry ourselves about mowing the lawn this week.

"Did he push another world leader so he could get his photo taken first?" I wondered aloud. "He'd be in the time out chair until lunchtime if he acted out like this in kindergarten."

"No, he's doing those late night tweets which make no sense again."

I sighed. "Do any of his tweets ever make sense?"

I mean, how can saying one thing on the campaign trail and then doing the total opposite ever make sense in the sane person sense of the word? Trump stretches the definition of sanity on most days since taking office. Many heads of states have announced they won't do business with him--this after less than five months in office. There has to be a world record for disapproval being broken here, right? Even Nixon had high approval ratings in 1972 before his world came crashing in upon him in the Watergate Scandal, ending in his leaving office in August of 1974.

"He's made up a nonsense word and everyone is tweeting it and making fun of him for the past eight hours," my hubby informed me. "Take a look."

My husband showed me his Facebook feed on his tablet, and soon I was engulfed in the growing frenzy of covfefe memes and postings.

What did it mean, covfefe? Your guess is as good as any I was told, a mysterious nonsense word coined by a nonsensical president who feels it's more important to tweet like a teen than sleep nights or catch up on his security briefings reading.

In the end, we discovered that Trump meant to say coverage as in press coverage, but, that if he meant to type it c-o-v-f-e-f-e, then he had every right and duty to do so as president.

Mystery solved, but another one begins. Why did this one typo take off with such energy across the interwebs? Are we all so in desperate need of a good laugh, and a brief respite from the constant worry Trump imparts to all of mankind, that we are willing to spend time and energy making endless jokes about his poor typing skills?

Short answer: Yes.

Long answer: We are all acknowledging each other's anxiety and fears, and in a show of unity, we all came together to perpetuate one big comedic masterpiece of surreal brilliance to take some of the pressure off our troubled minds.

So, relax and enjoy some of the funnier memes I collected and sing along with The Official Covfefe Song (composed and recorded mere hours after the initial tweet). And may the covfefe be with you… always.

I can hear Paul McCartney crooning it now...
Activism on Parade
photos by Adrian Matthews and others

Now, that we've all relaxed a bit, it's time to get back to actively working to make the world a safer, more Trump-free place.  This means we have to get outside our comfort zones and interact with the public from time to time. What better way than by showing your activism colors at a local fair or festival? (And who doesn't love a parade?)

Enjoy these photos of the Lucas County (Ohio) Green Party, the local Berners' group, Our Revolution in Northwest Ohio,  and Ohio SPAN (Single Payer Action Network) marching side by side in the annual King Wamba Parade through the Old West End of Toledo. (Think of it as Mardi Gras in June in the Great Lakes without fear of snow.) Local progressive groups manned tables and talked to many concerned citizens during this friendly festival of food, music and good ol' fashion flea markets on front lawns. By having a presence in the parade and festival, we demonstrated progressives aren't rare in our area (as mainstream media may cause some to believe) and that we're welcoming new members to join us in the fight.

Can you think of a better way to inform others about what's happening to their health care, to our banking system and to the move to amend the Constitution and rid it of Citizens United forever? Go and do likewise and send us your photos and report on how successful you were.
Email photos to the blog at thebernieblog2016@gmail.com
We love hearing from progressives fighting to build a future to believe in around the country and around the world .

Berners unite!

Don't you want the whole nation to know about this?

Then click here and add your name to ask three of the largest media organizations in America: CNN, NBC, CBS, to cover this, so that the country's voters will boot these senators from office when they come up for reelection!

Thank you for helping to hold these corrupt fossil fuel politicians accountable for selling out!

From the Draft Bernie for a People's Party:

Draft Bernie is in the business of collaborating with other progressive groups. Bernie already built the infrastructure of collaboration. We need a people’s party and we are at that precipice moment when this can happen. It is doable. It might even be easier than we think since we are receiving so much help from the “Business Party” of Democrats and Republicans. We need to reach out to other progressive groups and political parties to unify our base.

Draft Bernie has friends. Nina Turner said recently that people are losing confidence in the Democratic Party. People in Ohio are not talking about Russia, but about the very progressive ideas of Bernie’s platform that will positively affect all of our families. Also, Dr. Cornell West sent his love and support for our call. His message was: “Thank you and stay strong.

Two weeks of exciting events are happening!

  • Stop by the Left Forum this weekend in NYC. We will livestream a Draft Bernie panel led by Nick on Sunday, June 4, at 10:00 AM EDT. The audio will be posted on the Draft Bernie FB page.
  • The People’s Summit is happening in Chicago, June 9-11. There will be over fifty Draft Berners in attendance! Join up on FB or on our event page to stay involved!
  • Nick just did an interview with Jimmy Dore, which will air early next week, right before the People's Summit. Don't miss it!

Get involved!

Call to Action for this week:

  • Please join our Facebook Week of Action. Create your own Facebook Event on your personal Facebook page and invite your friends to invite their friends to sign the Draft Bernie petition! We have directions, a graphic, links,  and even a video showing you how to post FB events at Draft Bernie Facebook Week of Action for more information.
  • Go to the March for Truth website to find out where this national event is happening near you this Saturday. This will be a perfect event for getting petition signatures. Just wear your Draft Bernie or Bernie t-shirt, bring a sign, some Draft Bernie business cards or flyers to pass out and the Draft Bernie petition sheets and you will be surprised at how many people will be interested in talking to you about Draft Bernie for a People’s Party. You can also do this at any community event, in front of a library, or on a busy street corner.

How to GET involved!

If you would like to get in touch with your Draft Bernie State Organizing team, the easiest way is to sign up to volunteer on the Draft Bernie website. You could also email us at organize@draftbernie.org and tell us what state you live in. We will send you the contact information for the Draft Bernie team in your state.
If you are interested in tracking Bernie events, please email your contact information to organize@draftbernie.org and we will contact you.

Good news! The Draft Bernie Events Map is up on the website. Post your Bernstorms, local, or national events on the event map.  Let’s cover this map with Draft Bernie events! (Also post your events on the State Draft Bernie FB groups and on your own personal pages!)

Thanks for volunteering to get involved and for the great questions and suggestions last night. We are already on the success track. The time has never been more ripe, the dissatisfaction so great, and the willingness for real change more intense. Let’s start now visualizing our Founding Convention!

Feel the Bern!
In solidarity,

From Rainforest Action Network:

There’s a fight brewing.

The issue: A tar sands pipeline called Trans Mountain — otherwise known as Dakota Access Pipeline North.

On one side: Indigenous peoples, local communities, and environmentalists.

On the other: Oil giant Kinder Morgan and big banks.

First Nations and Indigenous tribes including the Tsleil-Waututh Nation, the Coldwater Indian Band, and the Squamish Nation (whose lands are located along the route of Trans Mountain in Canada) have not given their consent for the pipeline. The pipeline threatens their land, water and and sovereignty.

Their fight is similar to that of the Standing Rock Sioux, who activated thousands of people to resist the Dakota Access Pipeline.

Banks like Citi are regretting their investments in the Dakota Access Pipeline. Citi chairman Mike O’Neill even said “We wish we could have a do-over on [the Dakota Access Pipeline].” Now is the chance for a do-over — banks must avoid funding Trans Mountain.

Kinder Morgan is paying for Trans Mountain in two ways: selling shares of the pipeline and other Canadian assets and attempting to secure C$5 billion of credit specifically to fund Trans Mountain.

14 banks, including JPMorgan Chase and Bank of America, are selling shares of the pipeline (and pocketing a big commission in the process). But there’s still time to stop them from giving Kinder Morgan a credit card for the remainder of the money.

Other banks like Citi, Wells Fargo, and BNP Paribas are current lenders to Kinder Morgan but haven’t yet committed to specifically lending to Trans Mountain.

Banks already faced massive resistance to the Dakota Access Pipeline. Let them know they will face the same fight against Trans Mountain.

The stakes are higher than ever. Trump just announced the U.S. will be pulling out of the Paris Accords, a global agreement to stop climate change. We can't count on a government ruled by corporate greed to protect the planet.

To curb global warming, we must get banks to stop funding tar sands projects — one of the dirtiest types of oil on the planet. We must protect our air and water from the shortsighted greed of fossil fuel corporations.

All of us who believe in a better world for our children must come together and send a powerful message to banks: stop banking on climate change and violations of human rights.

For the future,
