Senator Bernie Sanders made a surprise visit to Ohio's capital on Sunday morning to rally the troops in the ongoing battle to save the A.C.A. and shut down Trumpcare 2.0, a thinly disguised tax break bill for the billionaire class at the expense of ordinary Americans' health and well-being. Bernie's coming to Columbus was on very short notice (a Friday afternoon email), so the packed to overflowing house of 2000+ enthusiastic attendees at the downtown music performance venue was a pleasant surprise. No doubt about it--Ohioans are serious about saving their health care.

The rally was sponsored by MoveOn.org and other Ohio groups, and its aim was simple: Convince Republican Senator Rob Portman to vote against the Republican bill. The crowd was urged to continue to call, email and visit Portman's offices throughout the state and share their health care stories, explaining how important Obamacare is to them and their families. (Here is a website that will help you make the call to your senator and tells you what to say: https://www.aft.org/call-now)  Photos and memes on the big screens before the speakers took stage gave sobering statistics and a few encouraging ones as well: Only 17% of Americans (16% according to Bernie in the very latest poll) approve of the Republicans' attempts to repeal and replace the A.C.A.  However, 23 million Americans are at risk of losing their coverage, adding to the 28 million without health insurance in those states that never accepted the Medicaid extension. The time to block this mockery of a health care bill is now.

Opening rally speakers included Ohio MoveOn organizers, a community health care center doctor from Dayton, a local pastor who has witnessed the good Obamacare has done for his members and could continue to do for them, and a veteran speaking for Planned Parenthood and women's health services which are threatened by the new bill. ("Republicans say they'll give you a choice of private insurers, but not give a woman the right of choice over her own body.") No one held back on their condemnation of Trumpcare. The young, the old, the disabled, pregnant women and anyone with a pre-existing condition (as determined by a private health insurer) could see their access to health care vanish overnight if the senate bill is passed.

Bernie was in great form, looking energized and determined to take on opponents of the A.C.A. He gave a straightforward and impassioned plea to his fellow senator, asking Rob Portman to listen to the cries of his constituents who can't afford to lose their health care coverage. The Medicaid extension program has been essential in helping Ohio fight its opioid addiction crisis; the state is a leader in opioid/heroin overdoses and death. Over half of the births in Ohio are covered by Medicaid currently, and it has a high infant mortality rate. By cutting back the Medicaid program and allowing private health insurers to cancel policies for pregnant women and their babies, addiction and mental health services and other pre-existing conditions, Trumpcare would leave some of the most vulnerable Ohioans without essential services, adding to the state's rising toll of preventable deaths.

Bernie noted that two-thirds of all nursing home patients in America receive Medicaid as well as Medicare. Where would these older/disabled patients go if they lost these programs? He remarked how many hardworking Americans are already working two or more jobs (often without health care provided) and are stretched as it is to make ends meet. Could they afford to take care of aging or sick parents on top of taking care of their children's needs? What if they had to quit their jobs to take care of an ailing family member? How would they feed and shelter all family members and afford their health care needs? The implications of not providing these life-saving programs are dire. The AARP, the American Medical Association and many other organizations have decried Trumpcare for allowing private health insurance companies to gouge older Americans by raising their premium from two to five times what they pay now.

The crowd booed and shouted as Bernie listed all those who would be hurt and how thousands could die if the A.C.A. is repealed and replaced by the Republican senators' legislation. He noted that the bill was written in secret by a baker's dozen worth of white males and never put before a committee or debated on the floor of the Senate. "Obamacare is far from perfect," Bernie admitted, but it is a first step toward implementing a Medicare for All program so no American ever again has to go bankrupt because of medical bills or live with the anxiety of not having health care. He urged everyone to call Senator Portman and express their outrage at this "immoral piece of legislation."

Morality--and the lack of it in our current government--isn't something Bernie Sanders shies away from discussing. He faces the issues and speaks with complete candor. "Our country is facing a moral crisis," Bernie stated.  "A nation is judged on how compassionate it is and how it treats its most vulnerable citizens." How does the U.S. measure up to those standards?  Not well under Trumpcare. Lives are at stake. 

We are in need of moral leadership--not simply leadership by well-dressed politicians spouting platitudes while accepting bribes from Big Pharma. Five months after Donald Trump stepped into office, Senator Bernie Sanders continues to lead ordinary Americans toward a future worth believing in and fighting for. Bernie's moral compass leads us along a straight and true path to a better, healthier America for all of its people.

Franklin Tennessee-based Community Health Systems, a hospital operator, is the fourth-biggest donor with $28,850 in donations," according to Time. 4. Senator Mike Enzi Donations from health care industry: $27,000 "DaVita HealthCare Partners is Enzi’s campaign committee’s top donor from 2011 to 2016, with $27,000 in contributions," according to Time. 5. Senator John Thune Donations from health care industry: $27,000 Sanford Health contributed $40,246 to Thune’s campaign committee, according to Time. 6. Senator Mike Lee "A pro-life politician, Lee writes on his web site that, “every individual, regardless of age, health, or condition of dependency, deserves the respect and protection of society.” The House version of the American Health Care Act would allow states to apply for a waiver to weaken protections for those with pre-existing conditions and strip Medicaid reimbursements from Planned Parenthood, funding that accounts for 40% of the organization’s annual budget overall," reported Time. 7. Senator Ted Cruz "In 2013, Cruz led a government shutdown that failed in its goal of de-funding the Affordable Care Act, but not before Cruz read the Dr. Seuss classic “Green Eggs and Ham” as part of a 21-hour floor speech. Cruz today is reportedly pushing to allow states to waive Obamacare’s requirement that insurers cover everyone, regardless of health status, and that they not charge people with pre-existing conditions any more than healthy people," according to Time. 8. Senator Tom Cotton An advocate of Medicaid reform, he supports repealing ObamaCare, according to Time. 9. Senator Cory Gardner Donations from health care industry: $58,500 "His fourth largest contributor was Blue Cross Blue Shield, with $33,000; United Health also contributed $25,500," according to Time. 10. Senator John Barrasso Donations from health care industry: $44,800 "Richie’s Specialty Pharmacy, one of Texas’ leading pharmaceutical providers, is Barrasso’s biggest contributor from 2011 to 2016, with $44,800 in donations," according to Time. 11. Senator John Cornyn Donations from health care industry: $57,450 His third largest donor, "was Mednax Inc., a medical solutions group and one of the nation’s leading providers of health services, with donations of $57,450," according to Time. 12. Senator Robert Portman "Another Senate Republican who hails from a state that expanded Medicaid under Obamacare, Portman has emerged as a leader of the effort to compromise on the issue. Senate Republicans finally crawled out of hiding and revealed their version of Paul Ryan’s AHCA. While 13 Republican men decided the fate of your health behind closed doors, Senate Democrats rightly complained about the lack of transparency in this trainwreck. During all the kerfuffle (or is that covfefe?) surrounding Trump's announcement that the U.S. wouldn't support the Paris Climate Agreement, something wonderful happened. It didn't get much (if any) press coverage (or is that covfefe?) in the mainstream media since it doesn't make the lobbyists for Big Oil and Fossil Fuels particularly happy, but fortunately the alternative media outlets thought it was a worthy story and have reported on it extensively.

Many American cities such as Pittsburgh--and a few states such as Illinois--have come to the conclusion they will support the climate treaty and follow its goals. By acting in defiance of the idiocy coming out of the White House, these cities and states have grown a backbone overnight. They aren't afraid of going against the anti-environmental sentiment festering in Washington these past months. They plan on developing and encouraging green energy usage and growth, (solar, wind, geothermal, tidal, etc.), and they plan on doing so with or without the federal government's help or blessing.

When you think about it, it makes perfect sense. Who will suffer first from the effects of climate change? The populations of our cities. With the rising of the Earth's mean temperature and the accelerated melting of the polar and Antarctic ice caps, the oceans rise and coastal cities like Miami flood. I take that back--they don't flood; they disappear totally off the map under a mountain of sea water, driving millions of people inland. Where will all these displaced refugees of climate change live? Who will deal with housing and feeding the increasing number of homeless in their time of crisis? How big is your city's homeless shelter?

A defunded Environmental Protection Agency will lead to the dumping of pollutants into our lakes and streams from unregulated activities such as spraying toxic pesticides in our waterways, fracking wastewater and coal-fired power plant ash dumping, further stressing cities' aging water treatment facilities. Who will pay for these needed infrastructure improvements so we aren't drinking contaminated water? The tax payers. Who will suffer the most when there's no money to be had because the tax base has shrunk due to sending jobs offshore and the income inequality practices of many corporations? Ask the residents of Flint, Michigan, the first among many cities who will find themselves in such a situation.

 You guessed it--water pollution is considered a local problem in an Ayn Rand-libertarian "every man is his own separate island" America. Your town's water is your problem. So, if any governmental agencies need be concerned with climate change, it is our cities that will foot the bill. 

And it isn't just the increased fear of 100 year flooding (great a risk as it is) that concerns cities and states. Elevated greenhouse gases caused by burning fracked gas will yield stagnant air masses and the risk of increasing airborne particulate pollution, resulting in a sharp rise in cases of asthma and other chronic diseases. Who gets stuck with the bill for helping millions of coughing and gasping citizens? Trumpcare 2.0 certainly isn't Medicare for All, is it? With Trumpcare's promise of eliminating the pre-existing condition clause of the A.C.A., cities and states, which are already stretched trying to cover indigent populations' health needs, will have even more human beings to take care of.

After all, what private health insurer is going to sell insurance to citizens of a city or state with poisonous smog problems and a polluted water supply? If they do decide to sell health insurance, you can bet the premiums will be out of the range of affordability for 99% of the population. If you can't afford it, you can't have health insurance, can you? You probably aren't going to be able to pay for treatment out of pocket, either. It's a perfect example of discrimination of the poorest by the richest.

And there's the rub--Trump's refusal to follow the Paris Climate Agreement is essentially a tactic by the 1% to wipe the rest of us off the map by flooding or poison watering or killer smogging us into oblivion. The mega-wealthy will be okay with their billions in their offshore bank accounts and their strongholds in New Zealand, where they'll grow their own organic foods and live off grid with their own wind turbines. I'm certain some bright-eyed billionaire will even go into the bottled oxygen business such as Nestlé has gone whole hog into the bottled water business, buying up many municipalities' water sources. Imagine the advertisements…

Announcer: "Want to breathe easier? Buy Trump Brand Bottled Oxygen. It's what all your favorite celebrities and reality TV stars breathe. Only losers breathe a poisonous atmosphere. Bigly losers! So, buy Trump Brand today and breathe like a billionaire."

Support your city and state when it makes a declaration to stand by the Paris Climate Agreement. (Sign the agreement here to show your support.) Your lungs--and the very land you walk upon and the water you drink--may very well depend on it.

While most of the country wasn't looking, House Republicans voted to claw back virtually every banking regulation implemented after Wall Street crashed and the Great Recession began. With so much scrutiny on the White House, Senate Republicans are now poised to roll back Dodd-Frank and the Affordable Care Act in the same month. Mitch McConnell, Paul Ryan, and every other politician bought by Wall Street and corporate donors thinks that they can get away with this while we're distracted by the daily circus in the West Wing.

We haven't forgotten what Wall Street deregulation got us last time. A reeling housing crisis, millions of people's life savings wiped out, and 800,000 jobs lost every month by the time George W. Bush left office. We remember Occupy, and the reprieve that the most egregious offenders got from going to prison. Executives at the largest financial firms who gambled people's hard-earned life savings away were treated less harshly than the people actually paying their mortgage.

We need to break the big banks up and implement a modern day version of Glass-Steagall, but we have to stop Republicans from rolling back even more Wall Street regulations first. The Financial CHOICE Act wipes out the Dodd-Frank law signed in 2010, putting the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau in Donald Trump's control. That's right, the department charged with protecting consumers will be under the control of a person who has spent his entire life ripping people off. The biggest banks that were considered “too big to fail” at the time of the Recession are even bigger now, and virtually all new income is going to the top one percent. Giving Wall Street another break isn't solving the crisis of income and wealth inequality.
 

While Paul Ryan and the House were stripping essential banking protections, voters in the United Kingdom rejected the Conservative government and their cabal of bankers and billionaires, and embraced Jeremy Corbyn and the Labour Party's reinvigorated progressive movement. People across the world are ready for a movement that takes on the greed of the few, and works on behalf of the many.

Glass-Steagall is part of the solution, but it doesn't solve the entire problem. We've still got so much work left ahead, like overturning Citizens United to get Wall Street and special interest money out of politics. 

Nobody could have prepared for the daily assaults on our health care, housing, environment, and civil rights since Trump took office, but organizing as many people as we can is the only shot we have at fighting back against the greed he serves. Stand with us as we take on Wall Street and the special interests that Congress represents. Sign our petition to let Congress know we won't let Wall Street take us back into another recession.
