Deal With The Devil

by Mark Taylor, DeMOCKracy Ink

Deal With The Devil
by C.A. Matthews

About once a year, I feel compelled to write a post about the dangers and pitfalls of lesser evil voting in the US. So here it is, for better or worse.

If you add a letter “d” to the front of the word “evil”, you’ll get the personification of evil, that is, the “devil.” However lesser evil voting is being discussed, the end result is the same: The voter is being asked to make a deal with the devil or evil.

What is often left out of this old saying are what consequences you incur when you make a deal with the devil. Here’s the complete saying: “When you make a deal with the devil, be careful you don’t get burned.”

Dealing with the devil can get you burned. Lesser evil voting burns voters. Don’t believe me? Let’s take a closer look.

The Devil is in the Details

First, a definition of lesser evil voting is needed. In the lesser evil voting scenario, voters are informed that there are only two candidates running for each office. We’ll call them candidates “A” and “B”. Voters are told they have no other options, and they have been convinced of this fact. They feel compelled to vote for either A or B or stay home and not vote. That’s it.

But what if voters don’t care for either candidate A or B? What if they strongly detest and/or despise both A and B? Can they vote for candidate C, D, E, or F instead? In most states in the United States there are other candidates’ names printed on their ballots for each office. However, many voters have been programmed (brainwashed) into thinking those options simply do not exist for them, so they’re stuck with choosing between A and B or not voting at all.

But what happens when a voter decides to vote for C, D, E, or F, and their treachery to vote outside the box is discovered? Woe to that voter! The voter will be vote shamed and pressured to change their mind. The most common vote shaming method is to tell renegade voters that they have cast a wasted vote because they refused to vote for either A or B. They are informed by supporters of A and B that all voters who dare to vote for C, D, E, or F are stupid and foolish.

Other forms of coercion exercised by supporters for A and B can include ostracizing these rebel voters socially in-person and/or online, threatening the rebel voters’ careers or job positions, and sometimes even threatening or committing physical violence against the rebel voters or their property.

All of these forms of lesser evil voting coercion tactics have been documented widely (and some of them experienced by yours truly). These are only but a few of the ways voters can get burned when making a deal with the devil called lesser evil voting.

I’m sure there are supporters/past-supporters of A and B out there whose ears are burning about right now as I expose their crimes. But I’ve found that lesser evil aficionados often are proud of their vote shaming tactics. They rarely get caught or charged with any criminal activity since fellow A or B supporters will cover for them, so I doubt they’ll ever stop the dirty tricks.

With that sort of pressure placed upon voters to consider voting for only A or B, what do you think happens to candidates C, D, E, and F? Do you think they receive as much attention in the mainstream media as A and B do? Lesser evil voting supporters for A or B cannot afford to allow voters to learn about other candidates and their platforms, so mainstream media spokespersons are generally kept in line and told to exclude all mention of other candidates as much as possible.

Can you see how this practical censorship would prevent C, D, E, and F from effectively advertising or fundraising? Without sufficient funds to campaign, what would you say are the chances of these alternative candidates being able to compete against the well-funded and well-promoted campaigns of A and B? Did you say zero to none?

It should be obvious by now that lesser evil voting isn’t really a strategy to help American voters choose a candidate who represents their values, needs, wants, or desires. Lesser evil voting is simply a method to get rid of A’s and B’s competition.

Think about it: It’s much cheaper and easier for corporate lobbyists, wealthy individuals, and political action committees (PACs/Super PACs) to bribe two candidates to do as they command than a multitude of candidates who may or may not be open to taking corporate lobbyist cash. This legal bribery of politicians in the US is allowed under the 2010 Citizens United ruling. Money talks, and it talks much louder than average voters' voices, obviously.

How fair is lesser evil voting? Not fair at all unless you absolutely adore A and/or B. But it’s completely legal and acceptable by the parties of A and B who rather you didn't know you have more choices. Here’s an example of how it’s manifesting itself in this year’s presidential election.

The Devil You Know...

Americans worship stability and sameness. Life just seems safer that way. Even if their present lives are miserable or downright unbearable, Americans’ philosophy of life can be summed up thusly: “Better the devil you know than the devil you don’t.”

Note once again how the letter “d” can be subtracted from “devil” leaving the word that describes the devil’s best known quality of “evil”. Americans rather put up with a known evil than radically change their lives by making a different choice, possibly for the better, because what if their choice proves worse than the one they’ve been told to make by supporters of A or B? Many American voters seem paralyzed by indecision. They seek guidance and are looking for someone else to make the decision for them.

If only Americans believed they needn’t be cornered into corner A or B! Think of all the possibilities for a brighter future voters might have by choosing C, D, E, or F. How can we break through such a lack of imagination and encourage American voters to invite change and consider non-duopoly (non-A or -B) candidates?

Let’s say you’re an American voter who wants the genocide in Gaza to end as soon as possible and all the war criminals punished. You’re sick and tired of the bloated US military budget and long for more funding for programs such as Medicare For All, free university tuition, student loan debt forgiveness, and programs to tackle the climate crisis. What are your choices for president who speak to your conscience?
Here in a nutshell are the options of the upcoming presidential election:

A – a current known evil who supports the genocide in Gaza and takes money from AIPAC and many corporations/PACs

B – a past known evil who supports the genocide in Gaza and takes money from AIPAC and many corporations/PACs

C – another candidate (with a famous last name) who accepts corporate cash and loudly supports the genocide in Gaza and takes money from AIPAC/PACs

D – a candidate who doesn’t accept corporate/PAC cash and doesn’t support the genocide in Gaza, supports Medicare For All and climate crisis actions, and will probably be on all 50 state ballots and the District of Columbia

E – a candidate who doesn’t accept corporate/PAC cash and doesn’t support the genocide in Gaza but probably won’t be on very many state ballots

F- a candidate who doesn’t accept corporate/PAC cash and doesn’t support the genocide in Gaza but probably won’t be on very many state ballots

(G, H, I candidates – some accept corporate/PAC cash, some don’t support the genocide or war, but most probably won’t be on very many state ballots)

Looking at the above chart, you’ll see that your personal choices do not include the A or B candidates that lesser evil voting strategists are going try to shame you into voting for. Your best bet to change the leadership the White House to a person who represents you is to vote for candidate D or possibly E or F or one of the other lesser known candidates if they're on your ballot. By voting for a candidate like D, you’ll feel proud of yourself that you aren’t perpetuating the genocide in Gaza and are helping to make the US a better place for all its people.

Sounds like a sound voting choice that reflects your values and speaks to your conscience, right? If only it was that easy in the USA!
The political parties of A and B will do all that they can to block your preferred candidate’s name from being on as many states' ballots as they possibly can. With huge war chests of campaign donations from military-industrial complex corporations and money from PACs such as AIPAC, these parties will use every legal and extra-legal trick in the book they can to prevent any competition from challenging them. Supporters of A and B who own the mainstream media outlets will block all mention of the other candidates and pass along the propaganda that teams A and B dream up to slander/libel their competition.

Many American voters, never knowing there are actually candidates who closely represent their own values because of the practical censorship, might choose to stay home and not vote. Voter apathy in the US is sky high, and with such a screwed up system, is it any wonder?

This is lesser evil voting strategy at its worse. These devils you’ve known for years are anti-democratic and bullies. And you will be forced to put your conscience to sleep and vote for A or B because you’re told these are your only options.

You’ll be told that C, D, E, or F have no chance of winning, not realizing that in poll after poll the largest percentage of American voters consider themselves as independent. These voters don’t support the parties of either A or B and stay home more often than not if they don't have another option. If that large percentage of voters followed their conscience and voted for other than A or B, another candidate might actually win. The math speaks for itself.

Vote shaming can be intense, but it can be dealt with rationally as the above meme demonstrates. A candidate must earn your vote and stand for your values. Follow a litmus test like I do to pick your candidate, and you'll never suffer from a guilty conscience. You won't be tempted to sell your soul to the devils and their corporate masters. You'll help others to avoid getting burned as well.

The great Eugene Debs gave us this sage advice that voters should always follow:

"I'd rather vote for something I want and not get it than to vote for something I don't want and get it."

Don’t be tempted to make a deal with the devil (d-evil). Don’t get burned. Stay away from lesser evil voting. Always vote your conscience, and encourage others to do the same. And may the best candidate win.

Two Americas

Two Americas

by C.A. Matthews

There are, in reality, two Americas. One for those who have justice. One for those who seek it and receive it not.

Many Americans believe they have not received justice when, in fact, they have received  justice at the expense of many others. When they get angry enough about what they perceive as a lack of justice, they're apt to form large groups or mobs and seek revenge against those they feel have thwarted it. They, of course, will not see themselves as vengeance seekers but rather as "patriots" or "revolutionaries."

What would you say is the main difference between an "Angry Mob" and "True Revolutionaries"? I'll venture to say it's one of simple motivation.

An Angry Mob is out for their own selfish gain and holds to a twisted sense of justice. True Revolutionaries want to see things change for the better for all people, so that all may enjoy the fruits of a just and fair world.

An Angry Mob in America will more than likely be made up of white supremacists, because white supremacists may want things to change--but only for the people who make up their group. They take their anger out on others who aren't in their group. They will not have any qualms about destroying public property or threatening violence against those in authority as long as they get their way.

One way to look at an Angry Mob is to think of them as cranky toddlers who don't get their way and throw a hissy fit when you tell them it's time for bed. Or a cranky toddler with the nuclear codes in his possession.

So, on January 6, 2021, the Feast of the Epiphany--the celebration of the Magi (Brown skinned immigrants) who traveled from the East (Iran?) to visit the infant Jesus (another Brown person)--the Angry Mob, containing openly defiant white supremacists, decided to trash our Capitol building and threaten violence on the people therein, killing a police officer in the process. Do these self-centered, homicidal, domestic terrorists think of themselves today as "True Revolutionaries" and "patriots"?  You bet your bottom dollar they do!

This irrational contradiction sums up the legacy of Trump's America. Correction--this has always been America's legacy. No matter what anyone says to the contrary, since America's inception we have worshiped violence. We throw temper tantrums whenever we don't get our way in the world and start coups d'état against governments that don't bend to our will. We've enslaved millions both in the past (forced immigrants from Africa) and in the present (underpaid wage slaves, both foreign born and domestic).

This is America, lady. You're not a patriot. You're a patsy for the oligarchy who couldn't care less about you or your friends.

There's been no great change to make life better, more just, for all Americans during the Trump years. Or the Obama years. Or the Bush years. Or the Clinton years. Or the Reagan years. Or probably even in the Biden years to come.

And that is perhaps America's saddest legacy of all.

Until we become united as a people into One America, a genuine democracy of the people and for the people, America will never be truly great--again or for the first time.

From Progressive Caucus Action Fund:

As white vigilantes attacked the US Capitol this week, the mayor of the District of Columbia had to ask the Trump administration for permission to deploy the National Guard to defend human life and preserve order on the streets of Washington.

It was denied, just one of the many injustices the diverse city of Washington faces without representation in Congress.

The Washington Post reports that “Democratic control of the Senate — and Capitol breach — put D.C. statehood front and center.”

Tell your members of Congress right now: DC needs statehood!

Statehood for the majority-minority District of Columbia is a racial justice imperative.

Over the summer, federal government police agencies used violent, draconian force against DC’s Black Lives Matter protests, over the objections of DC’s local government.

But when majority white pro-Trump rioters stormed the Capitol, the federal government dragged its feet and prevented the District from taking action.

It’s time to end taxation without representation, and stop treating DC’s 700,000 residents as second-class citizens.

PCAF supporters have written tens of thousands of letters demanding DC statehood, helping the Washington DC Admission Act pass the House for the first time ever last year. Now is the best chance we’ve ever had to make DC Statehood a reality.

Tell your members of Congress right now: DC needs statehood!

Thanks for taking action.

The world recoiled in horror as a band of pro-Trump rioters stormed the US Capitol, demanding that the current regime stay in power.

Many said, "this isn't America." But it happened here, not in a distant foreign land on our TV screens. And it was fueled by the President of the United States

Donald Trump is so dangerous to our democracy that he must be removed from power now, whether it's through swift impeachment or the 25th Amendment.

We have learned from the Trump administration how thin the line is between a robust democracy and state failure.

We saw the worst coronavirus outbreak in the world as America fell behind other first world nations. We saw how one wannabe strongman could threaten basic principles of democracy.

And now, a ragtag bunch of maniacs was able to penetrate the US Capitol.

For immigrants that fled chaotic regimes, these were dark reminders.

But our belief in the American spirit is strong. We can do better. We must do better.

And that starts with removing Donald Trump. Now.

Thanks for taking action.

When a president incites violence, calls his followers to commit treason, and disregards democracy it is clear they cannot be allowed access to our nuclear codes. Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi has already called on the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Mark Milley, to prevent an unlawful nuclear strike but the reality is, not even Milley could lawfully stop President Trump.

Deporting the DREAMers & Destroying the American Dream

Destroying the American Dream
 by C. A. Matthews

Hurricane Irma headed toward Mar-a-Lago the article title read. How ironic if Trump's dream golfing retreat was destroyed by the hurricane. (No worries, it's insured through a federal flood insurance program. Interesting that Trump, who wants to cut and eliminate government programs, has benefited so greatly from this particular one in the past.)

Many of Mar-a-Lago's workers are immigrants who are paid very little compared to union workers in similar positions at other resorts, and they probably lack the funds to evacuate and live elsewhere while the clean-up takes place after the storm passes. Trump is notorious for his stinginess. He doesn't care whose dream of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness he crushes just as long as he makes a profit.

One important thing Trump doesn't add to his equations of profit and loss and "running America like a business" is climate change and how it will affect the make-up of America.  Just as rising temperatures and rising oceans will affect rich and poor alike, we need to tackle the challenges of climate change together for the sake of future generations. And future American generations will not look like Trump and his half-Czech/half-Slovenian children--it will be of various hues, notably darker, and, more than likely, non-native English-speaking.

Climate change-caused flooding and droughts will bring more and more refugees to our shores, not less, unlike so many Tea Party members believe. No amount of  border walls or threats on Trump's part will stop these displaced people from coming. Their "dream" will be to simply survive and will not recognize borders, only safe havens. No amount of bloviating rhetoric will stop them.

Trump wants to deport almost 800,000 DREAMers who have made a contract with the government to become citizens, since they were brought to this country illegally as children by their parents. These DACA children have grown into hard-working taxpayers with a lower rate of criminal behavior and a higher rate of higher education than average.

Consider this: Trump wants to deport immigrants who work in many highly-skilled professions--doctors, lawyers, teachers, accountants, engineers, mechanics, nurses, dentists, I.T. specialists, etc.--as well as those DREAMers who serve honorably in our military. Can't he see the catastrophic effect deporting these workers will have on our economy and national security?
Is this part of Trump and his cronies' racist agenda all along--deport all the "foreigners" and leave all the jobs to their white buddies waving the Confederate flags and wearing Nazi armbands? I wonder, does Trump even realize how unskilled white supremacists are? White supremacists tend to possess a below average education and are incarcerated at a higher than average rate compared to DREAMers. Are there even enough of Nazis to fill all the vacancies at his resorts and hotels? Who would you trust to put in charge of a bunch of hateful ex-cons and their kind? Steve Bannon?

Just as the climate won't wait for Americans like Trump to acknowledge the reality of how human activity has affected it adversely, the world won't wait for white supremacists to get with the program and cooperate in order to build a safe, cleaner and healthier world for all. Other countries and other open-minded leaders will take the lead on the issues of climate change and immigration reform. We will have to follow or die off as a people. Then the American Dream will be no more.

For now, we can take comfort in the knowledge that Trump has already lost his $28 million mansion on the Caribbean Island of St. Martin to Hurricane Irma and has other South Florida properties besides Mar-a-Lago at risk. Perhaps a big business loss will get through his thick skull that climate change is real and not a Chinese hoax... Perhaps the lost of American prestige and leadership on the world stage will convince the low-info voters that now's the time to become educated on the true horrors the Trump agenda engenders.

Perhaps the threaten deportation of a million or more DREAMers and their families will wake up all Americans to the fact that Trump's tactics threaten their dreams as well.

Here are some actions you can take this week to show solidarity with both hurricane victims and the DREAMers. We can rebuild the American dream--make it bigger, more inclusive and more compassionate--if we work together to save our planet and each other.

Climate Hawks Vote

Now, in the wake of tens of billions of dollars of damage from Hurricane Harvey, 107 members of Congress in the Senate and House—including 4 from Texas—voted “NO” on an aid package to help survivors in the Gulf and to keep FEMA funded.

Their excuse? They wanted the cost of this disaster relief to threaten a government shutdown. That’s right, these 107 #HarveyHeartless Republicans are so committed to cutting taxes for billionaire polluters and making the rest of America suffer that they’ll vote against disaster aid.

Fortunately, they’re outnumbered by the members who voted FOR this essential relief.
Call your senators and members of Congress today to tell them how you feel about their vote for aid for Hurricane Harvey victims.

  1. See the bottom of this email to find out if your members are among the 107 #HarveyHeartless who voted against Harvey aid.
  2. Call your members of Congress: For those who voted NO: “My name is ... and I am from TOWN, ZIP. As a constituent, I am calling to condemn Sen./Rep. _______ for their vote against essential Harvey relief for millions of our fellow Americans. If they’re concerned about how to pay for climate disasters, they should raise taxes on the fossil-fuel billionaires who profit from polluting our climate. I will remember this vote on Election Day.” For those who voted AYE: “My name is ... and I am from TOWN, ZIP. As a constituent, I am calling to thank Sen./Rep. _______ for their vote for essential Harvey relief for millions of our fellow Americans. I will remember this vote on Election Day.”
  3. Email me back and let me know how the call went.

Our climate movement is not just about saving the future. It’s about taking care of our communities who are already experiencing the devastation of a changed climate right now.
Thanks for making the call today.

Your fellow climate hawk,

Brad Johnson

Donald Trump sent Jeff Sessions in front of reporters to announce an end to DACA. He didn't even have the courage to tell us himself.

The decision to throw 800,000 young people who came to the U.S. as children into legal jeopardy is despicable and immoral. Our Revolution believes that no human being is illegal. We need a path to citizenship not only for DREAMers, but all 11 million undocumented people living in the shadows today. When we bring people together and build stronger communities, everyone benefits.

There is a bipartisan consensus that DACA should be protected. It includes the most conservative and most progressive members of Congress. That's why your action is so important.

From Color of Change:

Today, more than ever our communities must continue to fight back against the Trump regime.  DACA currently protects over 800,000 young immigrants from being deported. It allows immigrants to stay in the U.S., live with their families, work, go to school, and thrive in their communities. Without such a program, millions of families will be torn apart.
But there's more: Trump is refusing to extend the Temporary Protected Status program for hundreds of thousands of immigrants who have sought safety here in the U.S. from harm, climate disaster, violence in their home country. Many Haitian immigrants and other Black immigrants benefit from this program. It is expected to expire in January. When it expires, many of these immigrants will be immediately deported -- forcing many to live in fear. There is already bipartisan support for the extension of TPS. But not for Haitian immigrants. The Trump administration has even said, "Haitians should be prepared to go home."2 No one should have to live in that kind of fear. There is no time to waste -- Congress must act quickly to protect all immigrants.

Tell Congress to pass the DREAM Act and extend the Temporary Protected Status program. Sign the petition.

Since the start of Trump’s occupation in the White House, he has laid out an agenda that harms immigrants. It began with the executive orders to strip funds from Sanctuary Cities and issuing travel bans that target Muslim immigrants. We cannot forget the Trump administration is determined to build a border wall. One of the country’s largest private prison companies GEO Group received one of the first contracts from the Trump administration that resulted in the opening of a large Texas detention center for children and families. All of this is happening right on the heels of Trump abusing his power and pardoning former Maricopa County, Arizona sheriff Joe Arpaio who was just convicted weeks ago for human rights abuses. He is a known racist who spent his entire tenure as sheriff racially profiling Latinx communities. But at every turn, people have fought back: blocking the travel ban, stalling the funding of the border wall, and cities filing lawsuits to protect Sanctuary Cities. So we know together we will continue to win each and every battle.

Trump's agenda is all part of a larger racist, white supremacist agenda to get rid of communities of color, and Black and Brown immigrants. Congress must stop Trump now. Congress must put forth the effort to not allow Trump use immigrants as pawns for his agenda to build a wall and must stop the increased policing. Their silence must end today.
Sign the petition to demand Congress pass the DREAM Act and extend TPS.

Trump does not care about any immigrant. He wants to get rid of every immigrant and their families. This is a clear attack on all Black and Brown immigrants regardless of their status. Congress can no longer stay on the sidelines and let Trump continue his vicious attack on immigrants. For years, people have been on the frontlines pushing for change that will end the discrimination and violence against immigrants. The reality is, more needs to be done to ensure all immigrants are protected. Congress must not exploit immigrants to promote Trump's agenda for building a wall or increasing funding for harsher policing and law enforcement. Instead, the legislation must reflect the justice our communities. We must end all criminalization of Black and Brown people. Every single person deserves the right to freely live their lives with dignity and without shame. This means, no ban, no wall, no deportations, no detention centers, #DefendDACA #SaveTPS, pass the DREAM Act, and protect our communities.

Sign the petition.

Until justice is real,

Our Revolution

Aloha,

For so long, young people who came to this country as kids through no choice of their own, have been forced to live in the shadows, too afraid to come forward because they don't trust that our government won't come after them. Even after DACA was put in place, so many were too afraid to apply because if the program got taken away, the government would know where they live and could go after them and their families.

But 800,000 young people in this country took that leap of faith, applied for DACA, and have relied on it to obtain an education, earn a living, and establish themselves in our communities.

The current administration's decision on Tuesday to end DACA leaves them feeling betrayed and afraid after they put their trust in our government.

Last week on Maui, I sat down with some of Hawaii’s DREAMers and heard their stories about living every day in fear of deportation until DACA was put into effect. They shared their stories of the opportunity and freedom they have experienced because of DACA, and the fear of uncertainty that now lies before them, with the prospects of their government targeting them and forcing them to leave the only home they’ve ever known.

This is not a partisan issue. It's an issue that affects communities all across this country. DACA’s termination is a call for Congress to act now. We should take this opportunity to actually fix the problem once and for all and provide a permanent solution for these DREAMers, so they are not forced back into the shadows.

I have had many conversations with people about this issue. I have spoken with those that support DACA, and those that do not support it. However, the most important part of any conversation about immigration and DACA is to be informed with the facts.

What is DACA?
DACA is a temporary program instituted by President Barack Obama that defers immigration action and provides relief from deportation for people who were brought into the United States as children and gives them a work permit.

Who is eligible for DACA?
The people who apply for and receive DACA must meet a number of requirements, including: they were under the age of 16 when they were brought into the U.S., they have lived most of their lives here, they are in school or have graduated or are an honorably discharged member of the military, they have not been convicted of a felony, a significant misdemeanor, or three or more misdemeanors.

How many people have DACA?
There are around 800,000 recipients of DACA right now in the U.S.

What can I do?
At the Sanders Institute, we believe that being informed, engaged, and involved in the discussion about an issue and a policy like DACA are the first crucial steps.

Thank you for staying engaged,
